  • Le Plasker in Plouharnel (fifth millennium cal BC)

    Open Access•Audrey Blanchard, Jean-Noël Guyodo et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 10

The monumental alignments found in southern Brittany, particularly Carnac, potentially mark the beginnings of the megalithic tradition in north-west Europe. Radiocarbon dates from excavations at a previously unknown section of this extensive megalithic complex, presented here, provide new insights into the dynamic history of construction during the fifth millennium cal BC. This refined chronology reveals not only that the site of Le Plasker—consi…

  • The Biad Standards

    Open Access•Samantha Reiter, Robert Staniuk et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article presents a series of recommendations for the publication of archaeological data, to improve their usability. These 12 recommendations were formulated by archaeological data experts who mined thousands of publications for different data types (including funerary practices, accelerator mass spectrometry dating, stable isotopes, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany and pathologies) during the initial construction of the Big Interdisciplinary A…

  • Elk Heads at Sea

Open Access•Bettina Schulz Paulsson, Christian Isendahl et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Tumlehed is the most well‐preserved and complex prehistoric rock painting in the coastal region of south‐west Sweden. Originally reported and described in 1974, we re‐documented the panel using digital and IR photography, DStretch image enhancement software, and non‐destructive PXRF spectroscopy. This re‐documentation revealed a more complex image inventory with several previously unknown motifs and image details. The new data provide a better ba…

  • Real and ideal European maritime transfers along the Atlantic coast during the Neolithic

    Open Access•Serge Cassen, Carlos Rodríguez-Rellán et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2019•Cited by: 2

The history of research on the Neolithic of the Atlantic façade shows how speculation about prehistoric mobility, especially across the sea, is mainly based on three types of archaeological evidence: megalithic monuments, rare stones, and pottery decoration. With the aim of approaching the issue from other perspectives, we have focused on the Morbihan area, a focal point of the European Neolithic during the mid-5th millennium BC. The analysis of …

  • A Highly Precise Chronology for the Process of Neolithization in Southern Scandinavia

Open Access•Bettina Schulz Paulsson, Magnus Andersson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•References: 6

In 2013, one of Sweden’s largest archaeological excavations started in association with the building of the European Spallation Source (ESS) multidisciplinary research center in Lund. The 160 radiocarbon dates that were produced for the project represent the most exhaustive dating program for a Scandinavian site so far and provide evidence for the human impact and activities on the site from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age. This article presents t…

    Open Access•Bettina Schulz Paulsson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 10

Approximately 2700 radiocarbon results are currently available from European megalithic contexts. The interpretation of these 14 C dates is often difficult. It is not easy to connect many of them from their archaeological context to the construction or the burial phase of the graves. This paper focuses on the megaliths of Scandinavia—a special megalith region—as it is the only place in Europe with 14 C dates directly referable to the construction…
