Lithic Research Roundtable 14, 2024
The 14th annual meeting of Hungarian lithic specialists was held on December 13, 2024, at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, University of Szeged, Szeged, organized by András Markó. The abstracts of the presentations and posters are as follows
Szeletian or not Szeletian. Bifacial industries from three open-air Middle Palaeolithic sites from the Cserhát Mountains (Northern Hungary)
During the last 15 years, three Middle Palaeolithic open-air sites were excavated in the Cserhát Mountains (Northern Hungary), lying at the northern periphery of the Great Hungarian Plain. The context was similar at each locality: the lithics were excavated from loess-like reddish or yellowish sediment from a depth of 50 -100 cm beneath of the recent surface level.Bifacially worked leaf-shaped points and knives associated with sidescrapers and end…
Jankovichian, Szeletian or a leaf point industry
The eponymous site of the Jankovichian industry was found at the Öreg kő cliff, in the northern part of the Transdanubia, Western Hungary. From the thick layer complex of the Jankovich cave, however, only 104 lithics were collected and the scarce data showed that the pieces belong to several archaeological entities. At the same time, the nearly total lack of the field documentation allowed the reconstruction of the stratigraphic position of each …
ʻ…Finding a smoother pebble or prettier shell than ordinary’ – Non-utilitarian artefacts in the upper palaeolithic – A case study from Mogyorósbánya (Transdanubia, Hungary)
During the excavations of the Upper Palaeolithic site at Mogyorósbánya several non-utilitarian artefacts were found. Beside the earlier published piece of fossil resin (amber) and lumps of red ochre, more than one hundred Palaeogene and Neogene fossil molluscs, large foraminifers, corals and trace fossils from at least three different geological formations, as well as numerous fragments of phyllite were documented. Pebbles of this soft shale were…
A novel approach in the mineralogy of Carpathian mahogany obsidian using complementary methods
Istállóskő revisited
The Istállóskő cave is one of the classical Palaeolithic sites in Hungary, generally regarded as the only important Aurignacian locality in Hungary with two discrete culture bearing layers. The lower unit, characterised by the presence of split based points played a key role in several theories on the appearance of the Upper Palaeolithic in Europe, while in the upper layer some Mladeč or Olschewa type points were found. In this paper the author r…
Considerations on the lithic assemblages from the Szeleta cave
The Szeleta cave was the first excavated Palaeolithic site in Hungary. The artefacts were scattered along the layer sequence and very few of them were excavated in thin, discrete layers. After the general review of the available documentation and some questions of site formation, four assemblages are analysed in the present paper, all excavated in the so-called hearth levels in the entrance and the main hall of the cave. The variability of the us…

The assemblages played a key role in several theories on the appearance of the Upper Palaeolithic in Europe; however, this is the first time that all the lithic artefacts found since 1912 until 1965 are studied in details. As a result of our analysis, none of the stud…
On the middle palaeolithic industry of the Jankovich cave (Northeastern Transdanubia)
The eponymous locality of the Middle Palaeolithic industry was first excavated 1913. As a result of nine years investigations, 104 lithic artefacts, made predominantly of radiolarite were collected from the exceptionally thick yellowish red sediment. According to our reconstructions, on the top of the layer s. str. Szeletian artefacts and osseous tools, in the lowermost level Micoquian-type stone tools were found. Unfortunately, the majority of t…
A kései középső paleolitikum csontipara a Kárpát-medencében
A szerző négy barlang (Pálffy/Dzeravá skála, Jankovich, Bivak,…
Levéleszközös leletegyüttes Debercsényből
t\t\t\tA Debercsény-Mogyoróson felszínen gyűjtött anyag eltér az eddig megismert cserháti bifaciális leletegyüttesektől: tipológiailag a szlovákiai és morvaországi levéleszközös („Szeletien”) csoporthoz kapcsolható. A Bükkből és a Zempléni-hegységből származó kőeszköz-nyersanyagok felhasználása azonban megegyezik a területről eddig megismert leletegyüttesek esetében megfigyeltekkel. \n\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\tThe small assemblage from Debercsény-Mogyor…
Preliminary report on the excavations of the Middle Palaeolithic site Vanyarc - Szlovácka-dolina
During the last years several new Middle Palaeolithic open-air sites with bifacial industries and high ratio of extralocal raw material were discovered by Attila Péntek in the Cserhát Mountains, Northern Hungary (MARKÓ-PÉNTEK-BÉRES 2002, MARKÓ-PÉNTEK 2003-2004). One of the most promising territory lies in the vicinity of Vanyarc (Fig. 1) where a number of surface concentrations were distinguished
Szeletian felsitic porphyry
Szeletian felsitic porphyry is one of the most famous raw materials used in the Hungarian Palae olithic. 1 It was identified, under various names, by students of the Palaeolithic material of the Bükk region in the earliest petroarchaeological descriptions.Due to its high silica content and homogeneity it was erroneously identified as hornstone, 2 later as ash-grey chalcedony, 3 even in petrographical descriptions based on thin sections. 4 Interes…
