C Dating to Study the Development of Soils in the Forest-Steppe of the Central Russian Upland as a Result of Bioclimatic Changes and Long-Term Cultivation
Temporal changes in soils of forest landscapes of the forest-steppe zone—Haplic Luvisols and Greyzemic Phaeozems—under the impact of Holocene climate changes (natural factor) and long-term cultivation (anthropogenic factor) were studied on level interfluves of the Central Russian Upland. These soils were developed from covering loesslike loam of varying thickness. To study soil evolution under the impact of climate changes, soil chronosequences o…

Comparative Dendrochronological and 14 C Dating of 15th Century Russian Icon
A 15th century Russian icon from the Novgorod region was analyzed using both dendrochronological and radiocarbon methods [liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)]. This orthodox icon represents the Mother of God (Dexiokratusa). Fine art experts attribute the icon to between the late 14th to the early 15th centuries. The last complete tree ring was dated to AD 1409. There are indications that the trees were cut …
Newly Designed 0.8-ML Teflon® Vial for Microvolume Radiocarbon Dating
We have tested two versions of an 0.8-ml volume Teflon ® vial, designed specifically for radiocarbon dating in the microvolume range, using a modern Quantulus 1220 TM liquid scintillation (LS) spectrometer. We determined the counting performance of each vial type in conjunction with different designs of copper holder, viz. , with and without the incorporation of a “Teflon ® light coupler”. We also compared the losses of sample benzene during a ty…
Ecological Chronology of Nuclear Fuel Cycle Sites
We compared 14 C levels in annual growth rings of pine trees around the Tomsk nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (NFRP) and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP). At the Chernobyl site, samples were taken from the control area (within a 30-km radius zone around the site) to a distance of 80 km. In Tomsk, we collected samples between 8–10 km and 10–15 km from the site, taking into account prevailing wind directions. Background samples were collecte…
