Sexualities
Referring in a plural case to “sexualities” indicates significantly more than a contemporary strategy at being inclusive across a spectrum of sexual diversity. Given the less than optimum ways many people have been, and still are, treated, based on minority sexual identity, or their attractions, practices, or gender differences, then using the plural case is a poignant reminder of the full wealth of humanity and not simply majoritarian representa…
Pedophilia
Pedophilia's significance in late modernity rests on its unconventionality, an extreme symbol of sexual decadence threatening “moral” communities and nation‐states. Since the early 1980s, pedophilia has mostly been formulated through political campaigns, professional etiologies, and media‐led local “moral panics,” notably in the campaign for “Megan's Law.” Pedophilia was coined by Krafft‐Ebing in Psychopathia Sexualis (1892) to define a range of …
Sexual Citizenship
All sociological analyses of human sexualities contain implications of differential social exclusion, and social movements such as gay liberation, feminism, and queer activism fight for sexual “rights” employing the rhetoric of equality. However, only in the decade around the turn of the century were such issues explicitly theorized and researched under the rubric of “sexual citizenship,” focusing on the political, legal, and economic constructio…
Word and Music Studies
The comparison of text to music is perhaps one of the most enduring metaphors of our critical practice, and, as Steven Paul Scher observed in an essay of 1972, its many variants are among the terms most often abused and misused in literary criticism. Musical techniques such as counterpoint, melody, harmony and rhythm abound in analyses of both verse and prose, and critics frequently resort to a musical metaphor when discussing textual effects or …
Speaking Over and Above the Plot
The relationship between opera and gay subcultures (especially male), lifestyle practices and consumerism has been noted by cultural critics and musicologists - the former in affirmative terms, the latter largely hostile. This article explores this relationship initially through a review of the existing literature before concentrating on the striking affinities in the discursive construction of both cultural forms. In the modern era, both opera a…
Falling angels? - the material construction of children as sexual citizens
Sexual Citizenship
This enthralling and provocative book provides a new grounding for the understanding of sexual rights. It argues that all varieties of sexuality under capitalism are materially constructed out of the complex interrelationship between the market and the state. The examples of different sexual rights and lack of rights that it examines include the experience of male homosexuals, bisexuals, transvestites, transsexualists and children. Meticulous, fo…
Section 28
Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988, which states that local authorities may not 'intentionally promote homosexuality' , enjoyed a rela tively quiet first anniversary at the end of May this year which was in marked contrast to the intense political debate and heightened media inter est which attended its birth. This article seeks to explain why, through an examination of Section 28 as law, by an assessment of its ideological locus within …
A Preliminary Evaluation of Tooth Tartar among the Preconquest Maya of the Tayasal Area, El Peten, Guatemala
A sample of 48 burials from the Tayasal Peninsula area, El Peten, Guatemala, is used to tentatively suggest a dietary shift sometime around Middle Classic times among the Maya. This conclusion is reached through an observed variation in the amount of calculus, or tooth tartar, deposited through time
