Affective States in Normal and Depressed Older People
Ratings on a 10-item affect checklist yielding composite positive affect and negative affect scores were made daily for 30 days by older people in residential care: 19 were diagnosed as having major depression, 21 had minor depression, and 37 were without psychiatric diagnosis ("normal"). The Dynamics of Caregiving for a Demented Elder Among Black and White Families
Caregiving dynamics were studied in a sample of 157 Black caregivers of elders suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. By comparison with White caregivers (N = 472), there were fewer spouses and more nonspouse-nonchild caregivers among Blacks. Caregivers of disabled older people were studied in terms of their appraisal of the caregiving process. A conceptual approach based on stress theory suggested that such appraisal was broader than the traditional term, "caregiving burden." The 22-item Philadelphia Geriatric Center (PGC) Morale Scale was subjected to a series of principal component analyses utilizing different item pools and rotating differing numbers of factors. People with senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) will be the principal group to suffer from cutbacks.
