  • Alternative Mitigation to Counter Resource Losses from the Lake Cumberland Drawdown, Kentucky

    Open Access•Valerie J McCormack, Kary Stackelbeck•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2020

This article presents a case study of the process of developing and implementing mitigation as the result of adverse effects to cultural resources from the drawdown of Lake Cumberland, Kentucky. Signs of a dam failure in early 2007 triggered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to implement the emergency drawdown. While the drawdown prevented a life safety catastrophe, it created a new erosion zone and exposed archaeological sites to looters.…

  • Maximizing the Research Potential of Refit Analysis Without Replicating Pincevent

    Kary Stackelbeck, Kary L Stackelbeck•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Lithic refit analysis is a time-intensive, yet rewarding, analytical tool that has the potential to yield substantial data for studies of spatial organhation, taphonomic processes, and technological organization. Few other types of analysis allow archaeologists to prove—not just hypothesize—spatial links between materials or features. Discerning what those links mean is another issue, but one cannot dispute that conjoining artifacts from differen…
