  • Making the New World Their Own

    Open Access•Sheila J Rabin•ARTICLE•Journal of Jesuit Studies•2016

The title of this fine study of the relationship between Jesuit missionaries and Chinese scholars shows that the author is determined to explore the Chinese side of that relationship far more than other recent studies of the Jesuits in China.Rather than a Eurocentric view of a "New World," which focusses on the Americas, Zhang relates how encounters with Europeans and, more important, encounters with Jesuits enabled late Ming-and early Qing-dynas…

  • Early Modern Jesuit Science. A Historiographical Essay

    Open Access•Sheila J Rabin•ARTICLE•Journal of Jesuit Studies•2013•Cited by: 3

The traditional narrative of early modern science, or the scientific revolution, made the Catholic church appear anti-scientific. However, as scholars during the last three decades have reconstructed science in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they have found that members of the Catholic church and the Jesuits in particular, despite their rejection of Copernican astronomy, contributed significantly to the advancement of science in those c…

  • La nature et les prodiges

    Sheila J Rabin•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•1998•Cited by: 2

  • Kepler's Attitude Toward Pico and the Anti-Astrology Polemic

    Open Access•Sheila J Rabin•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In two of his major works, On the New Star (1606) and Harmonics of the Universe (1619), Johannes Kepler engaged in an extensive debate against Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's Disputations against Judicial Astrology. But despite his disagreements with Pico's Disputations, Kepler wrote about it in these works with deep respect and even expressed many points of agreement with it. Ernst Cassirer suggested that despite Kepler's continuing practice and…

  • The Mirror of Alchemy

    Sheila J Rabin•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•1995

Alchemical theories are a central component of much of the thought, literature and visual arts of the middle ages and Renaissance. Chaucer, Donne, Ben Jonson and Shakespeare are all known to have been heavily steeped in the subject, but the influence of alchemical writings and images permeated much further, and still exerts a fascination today. This illustrated study is a scholarly and accessible introduction to the history, technical aspects, an…
