Social Media Public Opinion as Flocks in a Murmuration
We propose a new way of imagining and measuring opinions emerging from social media. As people tend to connect with like-minded others and express opinions in response to current events on social media, social media public opinion is naturally occurring, temporally sensitive, and inherently social. Our framework for measuring social media public opinion first samples targeted nodes from a large social graph and identifies homogeneous, interactive…
Attention and amplification in the hybrid media system
Building on studies of the hybrid media system and attention economy, we develop the concept of amplification to explore how the activities of social media–based publics may enlarge the attention paid to a given person or message. We apply the concept to the 2016 US election, asking who constituted Donald Trump’s enormous Twitter following and how that following contributed to his success at attracting attention, including from the mainstream pre…
The State Tradition in Germany
Even though it is only some analytical dimensions of political culture that will be dealt with in this chapter, some conceptual clarifications are called for (see also Chapter 1). Political culture can be understood as a set of collectively shared ideas about the political world. Industrieller Ballungsraum. Zur sozial- und politikwissenschaftlichen Problematisierung
By analysing the chances which social problems in industrial agglomeration areas have of being considered it has been argued that territorially based social needs and ecological interests can only be formulated and represented in a distorted and incomplete manner. This holds partly because in industrial agglomeration areas people’s interests are typically oriented towards the spheres of production and consumption. Another significant factor which…
