  • Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning for Value-Added Service Model in Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Open Access•Xiaoyu Zhang, Xiao-Yu Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2024

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is the backbone of the next generation smart city and smart grid; it not only provides near real-time two-way communication between the consumers and the energy systems, but also enables the third parties (TPs) to provide relevant value-added services to the consumers to improve user satisfaction. However, the existing services are implemented in a centralized manner, which has potential and associated secur…

  • The spread of awareness and its impact on epidemic outbreaks

Open Access•Stephan Funk, Sebastian Funk et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2009

When a disease breaks out in a human population, changes in behavior in response to the outbreak can alter the progression of the infectious agent. In particular, people aware of a disease in their proximity can take measures to reduce their susceptibility. Even if no centralized information is provided about the presence of a disease, such awareness can arise through first-hand observation and word of mouth. To understand the effects this can ha…

  • School violence, school differences and school discourses

Open Access•Chris Watkins, Melanie Mauthner et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2007•References: 14

This article highlights one strand of a study which investigated the concept of the violence‐resilient school. In six inner‐city secondary schools, data on violent incidents in school and violent crime in the neighbourhood were gathered, and compared with school practices to minimise violence, accessed through interviews. Some degree of association between the patterns of behaviour and school practices was found: schools with a wider range of wel…

  • Illness action rediscovered

    Open Access•Michael Calnan, D Wainwright et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Theoretical frameworks provide generalised accounts of illness action although empirical studies of the process are still in short supply. This study of upper limb pain provided a case study of illness action; as it is a common condition, there is uncertainty about its treatment and management, orthodox and non‐orthodox care are seen as legitimate sources of help and it is linked with a range of causes. Face‐to‐face informal interviews were carri…

  • Evaluating health‐care

    Open Access•Michael Calnan, D Wainwright et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2005

Background and aims There is considerable uncertainty over the diagnosis, treatment and management of upper limb pain, which has implications for patient care. Research into patient experiences and evaluation of health‐care has been neglected and the study presented here aims to fill this gap. Methods A two‐staged, mixed methodology was adopted. Phase 1 involved a postal survey of a random sample ( n = 2781) of the working age population (25–64) …

  • Managing hypertension

    Open Access•Myfanwy Morgan, Chris Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1988•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Lay beliefs and responses to antihypertensive therapy were examined through tape recorded interviews held with European respondents, who were predominately English and referred to as ‘white’, and people born in the West Indies. Respondents were aged 35–55 years, of manual social class and currently being treated for hypertension by their general practitioner. Nearly one‐half of the respondents identified stress or worry as a cause of their high b…

  • The relationship between breast and bottle feeding and respiratory illness in the first year of life

    Chris Watkins, C J Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1979•Cited by: 6•References: 3

The relationship between breast or bottle feeding and the incidence of bronchitis and pneumonia in the first year of life was examined in a birth cohort of nearly 2000 children born in Harrow, England, in 1963--65. Fewer episodes of acute bronchitis and pneumonia were reported in children who were breast-fed than in children who were bottle-fed. Firstborn children were more likely to be breast-fed than subsequent children. Mothers who smoked were…
