  • Virtual worlds, travel, and the picturesque garden

Robert Scott Stewart, Roderick Nicholls•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Geography•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Debate concerning virtual reality is often drawn in terms of sharply defined dichotomies--for example, between "real" (or "actual") and "virtual," "authentic" and "inauthentic," and "natural" and "artificial." In this paper we offer an alternative approach by suggesting a conception of a virtual world that highlights a continuity and commonality with our sense of everyday reality. We accomplish this in part by an examination of the English pictur…

  • More Bone Couches

    Open Access•Roderick Nicholls, R V Nicholls•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1991•References: 2

This paper publishes some Roman bone carvings in the Fitzwilliam Museum collected by Sir Henry Wellcome and given by the Wellcome Trustees in 1982–3. All seem to be from or associated with a range of elaborate couches produced in Italy in Republican and Early Imperial times and found in burials there and in the provinces. They have come to the Fitzwilliam largely because of that museum's earlier initiative in restoring such a couch, described by …

  • I. A Roman Couch in Cambridge

    Open Access•Roderick Nicholls, R V Nicholls•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1979•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In the autumn of 1972 there appeared on the London market a remarkable collection of many hundreds of pieces of richly carved bone, all reputedly found together many years ago and thought to have adorned ornate toilet boxes and similar containers from a single tomb. Closer examination, however, soon revealed that, except for the parts of four small pyxides, the whole of this material came from the decoration of a single ancient couch of hitherto …

Open Access•V R Desborough, Roderick Nicholls et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1970•Cited by: 2

The statuette of a centaur at Plates 8–9 was found during excavations at Lefkandi in Euboea, conducted by the British School at Athens during last summer. Standing 36 centimetres high, it is among the earliest representations of a centaur yet known from the Aegean area, and the largest of terracotta centaurs. Its outstanding interest seemed to the authors to call for a more detailed publication than the normal brief preliminary account of the exc…

  • Old Smyrna

    Open Access•Roderick Nicholls, R V Nicholls•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1959•Cited by: 19

Traces of fortifications around the area apparently once occupied by the city of Old Smyrna were observed by Louis Fauvel, and our first detailed description of them is that of Prokesch von Osten, who accompanied him there on a second visit in 1825. As we shall see later, it seems likely, though proof is no longer possible, that most of the circuit wall around the tell , as well as that on the low spur to the west of it on which the modern villag…
