The bandwagon effect on participation in and use of a social networking site
This study examined the bandwagon effect on participation in and use of one particular SNS — Facebook — using a Singapore–based sample of active Internet users. Building on theories addressing the social mechanisms of interactive or communicative technologies, we tested the postulation that the decision of individuals to participate in Facebook would be linked to their perceptions of how widely Facebook had been diffused either at large or among …
Selecting Online Videos from Graphics, Text, and View Counts: The Moderation of Popularity Bandwagons
Little is known about the counteracting influences of different recommending information in various presentation modes on Internet users' selection of content. Considering user-contributed video selection, this study examines how content introductions supplied by contributors (as video descriptions), system-aggregated user popularity signals, and a hybrid of system- and user-generated introduction—the thumbnail preview—contribute to or compete wi…
Examining International Country-to-Country Flow of Theatrical Films
The present study examined the country-to-country flow of theatrical films. We hypothesize that a country's level of film imports is influenced by the domestic cinema market size of the exporter, and cultural and linguistic ties between the 2 countries. Regression models tested a dataset drawn from UNESCO's data on annual film imports from major cinema-exporting markets. Results revealed that trade traffic rises with exporters' and importers' hom…
Economic and Cultural Influences on the Theatrical Consumption of Foreign Films in Singapore
This study investigates audience acceptance of foreign movies in an import-dominated exhibition market—Singapore. The characteristics of home cinema markets and the cultural distances of the film-exporting countries are operationalized in an empirical model to explain the highly varied demand in this import market for international films from various sources. We show that during 2002–2004 release frequencies and box-office performance for films o…
Concentration and Homogenization of International Movie Sources: Examining Foreign Film Import Profiles
This study examines the source diversity of the global film trade by assessing the profiles of individual countries’ imported films. Theatrical movie imports to 94 countries from 1970 to 1999, sorted by production origin (i.e., USA, Italy, France, U.K., India, Russia, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, and others), are tested, using United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization data, against hypotheses of centralization and homogeniza…
