LLM-enhanced computational grounded theory and the triadic dynamics of human-AI-society interaction
This paper advances a theoretical contribution, a triadic framework of human-AI-society interaction, and introduces a methodological innovation to support it. We argue that AI development is not a unidirectional pipeline from design to use but a recursive system of feedback loops across three interdependent spheres: practitioner-AI (design decisions), user-AI (application practices), and society-AI (evaluation and governance). To develop this the…
Natural Language Processing for Ancient Greek: Design, advantages and challenges of language models
Computational methods have produced meaningful and usable results to study word semantics, including semantic change. These methods, belonging to the field of Natural Language Processing, have recently been applied to ancient languages; in particular, language modelling has been applied to Ancient Greek, the language on which we focus. In this contribution we explain how vector representations can be computed from word co-occurrences in a corpus …
Fair Is Better than Sensational: Man Is to Doctor as Woman Is to Doctor
Analogies such as man is to king as woman is to X are often used to illustrate the amazing power of word embeddings. Concurrently, they have also been used to expose how strongly human biases are encoded in vector spaces trained on natural language, with examples like man is to computer programmer as woman is to homemaker. Recent work has shown that analogies are in fact not an accurate diagnostic for bias, but this does not mean that they are no…
Zbornik konference Jezikovne tehnologije in digitalna humanistika
With this year's conference we are celebrating the 20th anniversary since the first conference »Language technologies« which took place in 1998 in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana and was organized by Tomaž Erjavec, Vojko Gorjanc, Jerneja Žganec Gros and Anica Rant. The topics of the first conference were the development and application of language technologies for Slovene and directions for the future. 26 papers were presented, dealing with speech techn…
Sharing Is Caring: The Future of Shared Tasks
Shared tasks are indisputably drivers of progress and interest for problems in NLP. This is reflected by their increasing popularity, as well as by the fact that new shared tasks regularly emerge for under-researched and under-resourced topics, especially at workshops and smaller conferences. The general procedures and conventions for organizing a shared task have arisen organically over time (Paroubek, Chaudiron, and Hirschman, 2007, Section 7). …
Comparing Knowledge Sources for Nominal Anaphora Resolution
We compare two ways of obtaining lexical knowledge for antecedent selection in other-anaphora and definite noun phrase coreference. Specifically, we compare an algorithm that relies on links encoded in the manually created lexical hierarchy WordNet and an algorithm that mines corpora by means of shallow lexico-semantic patterns. As corpora we use the British National Corpus (BNC), as well as the Web, which has not been previously used for this ta…
Corpus-Based Metonymy Analysis
In this paper we make the case for corpus-based metonymy analysis and show that many interesting linguistic and statistical questions can only be answered by working with real texts. To facilitate such studies, we present a method for annotating metonymies in domain and genre-independent text. We advocate an annotation scheme that builds on regularities in metonymic usage, that takes underspecification in metonymic reference into account and that…
