  • Patterns and predictors of repeated violent suicide attempts

Open Access•Noémi Mónika Szeifert, Lajos Bálint et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Repeated violent suicide attempts constitute a distinct and exceptionally high-risk clinical phenotype. Prior violent attempts, male sex in the context of repetition, personality disorders and substance abuse-particularly polytoxicomania-emerged as salient risk markers. These behaviors appear to arise at the intersection of prior violent conduct and acute substance-induced psychopathological states, notably psychotic symptoms with impaired realit…

  • Uncovering key biopsychosocial risk factors in non-violent suicide attempts

Open Access•Noémi Mónika Szeifert, Barnabás Oláh et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our research supports the notion that suicide risk factors interact with one another, and in certain cases, their effects may be synergistic-mutually reinforcing-rather than antagonistic. Similarly, protective factors also appear to amplify each other's impact, suggesting a cumulative and interactive model of both risk and resilience

  • Students' mental health during the pandemic

    Open Access•Konstantinos N Fountoulakis, Konstantinos Ν Fountoulakis et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The current study reports that students are at high risk for depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and identified specific risk factors. It also suggested a role of believing in conspiracy theories. Further research is important, as it is targeted intervention in students' groups that are vulnerable both concerning mental health and conspiracism

  • A Real-World, Prospective, Multicenter, Single-Arm Observational Study of Duloxetine in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Open Access•György Szekeres, Sándor Rózsa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Suboptimal treatment response during anti-depressive treatment is fairly common with the first antidepressant (AD) choice, followed by switching to another agent in the majority of cases. However, the efficacy of this strategy over continuation of the original agent is less solidly documented in real-life studies. The aim of our present study was to ascertain the effects of switching to duloxetine following inadequate response to prio…

  • Every Night and Every Morn

Open Access•Dorka Gyorik, Nóra Eszlári et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

The role of circadian dysregulation is increasingly acknowledged in the background of depressive symptoms, and is also a promising treatment target. Similarly, stress shows a complex relationship with the circadian system. The CLOCK gene, encoding a key element in circadian regulation has been implicated in previous candidate variant studies in depression with contradictory findings, and only a few such studies considered the interacting effects …

  • Inflamed Mind

Open Access•J Bokor, Sára Sütöri et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Understanding and predicting suicide remains a challenge, and a recent paradigm shift regarding the complex relationship between the immune system and the brain brought attention to the involvement of inflammation in neuropsychiatric conditions including suicide. Among cytokines, IL-6 has been most frequently implicated in suicide, yet only a few candidate gene studies and without considering the effect of stress investigated the role…

  • Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow”

Open Access•J Bokor, Sandor Krause et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

While 5-HTTLPR did not influence previous suicide attempts or interacted with childhood adversities, it did influence current suicidal ideation with, in addition, an interaction with recent relationship problems supporting the involvement of 5-HTTLPR in suicide. Our findings that 5-HTTLPR impacts only certain types of suicide risk-related behaviors and that it interacts with only distinct types of recent stressors provides a possible explanation …

  • Nature and Nurture

Open Access•Xénia Gonda, Nóra Eszlári et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

The contribution of affective temperaments to depression is much higher compared to stress, and severity of exposure to life events influences the impact of affective temperaments on depressive symptoms, pointing to divergent pathways of emotional reactivity mediating the effects of stress on depression which can be exploited for prevention and treatment

  • Recent Stressful Life Events in Euthymic Major Depressive Disorder Patients

Open Access•Gianluca Serafini, Xénia Gonda et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Having a family history of suicide, history of psychotropic medications use, and reduced use of antidepressants is linked to a specific "at risk" profile characterized by the enhanced vulnerability to experience SLE

  • Does economic environment influence the strength of the positive association between suicide and unemployment

Peter Dome, Balázs Kapitány et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Referencias: 5

The ongoing economic crisis has spurred researchers to further investigate the positive association between unemployment and suicide.1 Two theories may explain the above association: the ‘causal’ theory (ie, job loss leads to the emergence of factors (eg, depression) that precipitate suicide) and the ‘selection’ theory (ie, subjects who are more prone to commit suicide (eg, suffer from mental illnesses) are also more prone to lose their job).2 ,3…
