The excavation of a turf-sided lock at Monkey Marsh, Thatcham, Berks
As part of the programme to re-open the full length of the Kennet and Avon Canal, the restoration of many of its locks was necessary. At Monkey Marsh lock, this restoration threatened the existence of a turf-sided lock and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Wessex Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological excavation and survey in 1989-90 to record the surviving phases of the structure. This paper presents a report on the archaeological work …

Reliability and Repeatability in Dendrochronological Analysis
Research into the dates of timber used for art‐historical objects has provided a large data set on which to test standard dendrochronological techniques. Some 177 sets of tree‐ring measurements, originally analysed by the late Dr J. M. Fletcher at Oxford University, have been re‐examined independently in the tree‐ring laboratories at the University of Sheffield and the Museum of London Archaeology Service. THIS PAPER describes the discovery of a number of medieval wooden fishtraps and their associated fishbaskets, found in a small area of the Severn Estuary. It compares the archaeological with the documentary evidence to reveal a continuing tradition dating back to at least the 10th century

Dendrochronology of the English Neolithic
In the period 1970-85, tree-ring research in Europe had resulted in the production of long oak chronologies for both Ireland and Germany going back over 7000 years (e.g. Brown et al. 1986; Leuschner & Delorme 1984). On the 29 July 1984 archaeologists engaged in a survey of the later Prehistoric and Romano-British landscape around Holme-on-Spalding Moor in East Yorkshire visited land at Hasholme which was being drained. An English Tree-Ring Chronology, A.D. 404–1216
AN 813-YEAR OAK CHRONOLOGY, A.D. 404–1216, is presented. Its construction has taken three years because of the difficulty of finding suitable Saxon timbers and the need to test the reliability of the dating. Although based on only a few timbers for the period c. A.D. 700, it can be used to date Saxon and medieval timbers whilst more material is found to consolidate that section of the chronology

A recent article (Lawler, 1980) mentioned a common misunderstanding in archaeological circles which this note attempts to correct: 'The (Runnymede) piles selected will be subjected to destructive testing (i.e. dendrochronology) to gain information concerning growth patterns, habitat and tree-felling patterns...'
