Experimental Study on the Origin of Cremated Bone Apatite Carbon
Bones that have undergone burning at high temperatures (i.e. cremation) no longer contain organic carbon. Lanting et al. (2001) proposed that some of the original structural carbonate, formed during bioapatite formation, survives. This view is based on paired radiocarbon dating of cremated bone apatite and contemporary charcoal. However, stable carbon isotope composition of carbonate in cremated bones is consistently light compared to the untreat…

The measurements presented in this list are part of the joint research program “Sonderforschungsbereich 95” of Kiel University for interdisciplinary research on problems of “Interaction Sea-Sea Bottom”, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. They are directed 1) to the study of the path of 14 C from the atmosphere into argillaceous sediments, and 2) to date stratigraphic records within sediment. Associated problems are to identify sour…

This list contains data obtained during 1971. Unless otherwise stated, all organic samples or organic fractions are carefully washed with dil. HCl and dil. NaOH to remove all carbonates. Age calculations are based on 95% of NBS oxalic acid standard activity with modern value A.D. 1950. Results are calculated using the Libby half-life and are given in the B.P. scale. Also ages of shells are calculated with the NBS oxalic acid standard. Ages are no…

This list contains data obtained during 1970. Age calculations are based on 95% of NBS oxalic acid standard activity with modern value A.D. 1950. Results are calculated using the Libby half-life and are given in the B.P. scale. They are not corrected for δ C 13 variations. Errors correspond to 1 σ variation of sample net counting rate including statistics of modern standard and background

Measurements reported in this paper were obtained with the 4.5 L and 3 L CO 2 counters, details of which were given earlier (Radiocarbon, v. 11, p. 423). The automatic data recording system built in 1968 (Hänsel, 1968) is now operating for both counting apparatus. For each one the counts of the guard counters ring (A counts), the total counts of the C 14 counter (B counts), the coincidences of central and guard ring counter (AB counts), and the a…

The following dates are samples measured since publication of Kiel III (Radiocarbon, v. 10, p. 328–332). Age calculations are based on 95% of the activity of NBS oxalic-acid standard as modern value of A.D. 1950. Results are calculated with Libby half-life and reported in yr before 1950. Error corresponds to 1 σ variation of sample net counting rate as well as modern standard and background, but does not include the uncertainty in C 14 half-life …
University of Kiel Radiocarbon Measurements III
Most of the measurements have been obtained with a 4.5-L CO 2 counter (Kiel I). Dates given are not corrected for C 13 /C 12 except Ulmus series. Error corresponds to 1σ of statistical variations of sample net counting rate including variance of reference and background, but does not include the uncertainty in C 14 half-life and in secular C 14 variations. Half-life is 5570 yr and a.d. 1950 is zero point of b.p. scale
University of Kiel Radiocarbon Measurements II
Most of the measurements reported here have been obtained with the 4.5-L CO 2 counter previously described (Kiel I; Erlenkeuser, 1965). A few samples have been dated with a 3-L proportional counter. The copper counter is surrounded by 28 GM counters in the form of a double ring. The total assembly is shielded by 10 cm of old lead. Neither an inner lead shield between counter and anticoincidence ring nor screening of sensitive volume by a quartz t…

The C 14 Laboratory at Kiel University was established in 1963. It continues measurements, which were made at the Institut für Kernphysik, Kiel, on age determination with Chlorine 36, which is produced by cosmic ray neutrons (Bagge and Willkomm, 1963, 1966). The first C 14 -counting apparatus was completed in 1964 and dating work started at the end of 1964 after extensive general tests of counter working conditions (Erlenkeuser, 1965). The data r…
