  • Trafficking Captives in South America’s Southern Cone: The Continental Route from Rio de la Plata to Lima in the Late Colonial Period

Juan José Martínez Barraza, Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Slavery•2024•References: 9

This article demonstrates the logic, efficacy and profitability of the commerce in enslaved persons between Rio de la Plata and Lima from the late 1760s to the second decade of the nineteenth century. Moving beyond the customary study of local markets, it combines newly located tax, custom and notarial records with recent studies to describe the intercontinental slave trade in the Southern Cone. It demonstrates how Lima’s demand for labor lay beh…

  • The Economics of Urban Slaveholding in Santiago, Chile, 1773-1810

Open Access•Celia Cussen, Juan José Martínez B•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This paper applies modern economic theory to the ownership of enslaved men and women in the labour market context of Santiago, Chile from 1773 to 1810. We calculate the internal rate of return for slaves by gender and age as a way to understand the economic justification of slavery in an urban scenario where free labour was also readily available. Based on archival sources documenting the selling prices for slaves, prevailing wages for free labou…

  • The Dynamics and Determinants of Slave Prices in an Urban Setting: Santiago De Chile, C . 1773-1822

    Open Access•Celia Cussen, Manuel Llorca‐jaña et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 19

This paper provides the first survey of slave prices for Santiago de Chile, c . 1773-1822. It also establishes the main determinants of slave prices during this period. We gathered and analysed over 3,800 sale operations. Our series confirm the usual inverted U-shape when prices are plotted against age, and that age was a very important determinant of slave prices. We also found that: female slaves were systematically priced over male slaves, qui…

  • Douglass Sullivan-González. The Black Christ of Esquipulas: Religion and Identity in Guatemala

    Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2016

Douglass Sullivan-González offers an analysis of the historical events that forged the long history of a life-sized crucifix in eastern Guatemala, the Black Christ of Esquipulas. He traces the colonial origins and development of the image and its shrine, and relates the contests for control of the pilgrimage site to the battles between conservatives and liberals for control of Guatemala in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sculpted by a Por…

  • Black Saint of the Americas: The Life and Afterlife of Martín de Porres

    Open Access•Celia Cussen•BOOK•Black Saint of the Americas•2014

In May 1962, as the struggle for civil rights heated up in the United States and leaders of the Catholic Church prepared to meet for Vatican Council II, Pope John XXIII named the first black saint of the Americas, the Peruvian Martín de Porres (1579–1639), and designated him the patron of racial justice. The son of a Spanish father and a former slavewoman from Panamá, Martín served a lifetime as the barber and nurse at the great Dominican monaste…

  • Death and Dying in Colonial Spanish America

Celia L Cussen, Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2013

The seven essays in this stimulating volume reflect on the ways in which the singularly individual physical event of death is “coded into” a variety of colonial Spanish American social, cultural, and political processes (p. 16). These articles not only accomplish well the volume’s explicit intention of bringing to an English- speaking audience some of the current approaches to the subject; they also synthesize and engage with recent work that, ra…

  • Epistolario de sor Dolores Peña y Lillo (Chile, 1763 - 1769)

Celia L Cussen, Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

Researchers studying the religious history of women in colonial Latin America have had to rely for their interpretations of female spiritual and convent life on a reduced body of letters and spiritual autobiographies. Raïsa Kordic’s carefully edited set of letters by an eighteenth-century nun in the Dominican Convent of Santa Rosa in Santiago is therefore a most welcome addition to a limited pool; it is only the second firsthand source of its kin…

  • Memoria del nombre y salvación eterna: Los notables y las capellanías de misas en Chile, 1557 - 1930

Celia L Cussen, Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2009

State-financed team research is a relatively new development in Latin America, but in Chile it is already bearing fruit. Despite some unevenness in the quality of the essays and minor redundancies in the presentation of its theoretical and methodological foundations, this book is an example of the benefits of setting a group of junior and senior researchers to examine different aspects of a shared historical problem. Here, five researchers from S…

  • The Search for Idols and Saints in Colonial Peru: Linking Extirpation and Beatification

Celia L Cussen, Celia Cussen•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2005•Cited by: 9

Recent interest in the cultural history of the middle colonial period in Peru has centered on two distinct clerical efforts to guide Christian behavior: the systematic inspection tours aimed at uprooting idolatry among the Indians of the Archdiocese of Lima (frequently called the “Extirpation”) and the initiatives to promote the beatification of saintly Limeños.1 Both campaigns were linked to the aims of the clerics assembled at the Council of Tr…
