Drinking water quality from rural handpump-boreholes in Africa
Groundwater provides a vital source of drinking water for rural communities in many parts of Africa, particularly in the dry season when there are few safe alternative sources. This paper summarises results from a study (n = 428) assessing dry season water quality, both microbiological and inorganic chemistry, in handpump equipped boreholes (HPBs) across the Ethiopia Highlands (n = 142), Malawi (n = 162) and Uganda (n = 124) using a stratified, r…
Balance and Freedom of Speech
The development of Canadian broadcast policy and law respecting “content balance” (and corollary notions of public “access and reply” entitlements, “abusive speech,” and “controversial issues of public importance”) exhibits significant definitional vagueness and discontinuity. The authors summarize the history of policy making in the area, and provide two case studies: one of religious television broadcasting, one of community radio broadcasting.…

A review of coastal dunebuilding in Eastern Australia
The distribution of transgressive coastal sand dunes in eastern New South Wales and Queensland is summarised and the factors involved in transgressive dune initiation are reviewed. On the basis of radiocarbon and pedological evidence, it is suggested that episodes of transgressive dune instability have been synchronous over large areas. Widespread sand blowing appears to have taken place in the early Holocene between 9,000 and 7,000 years ago. In…

The End of the World
From its beginnings the labour movement in Australia believed that the capitalist-owned daily press was a major obstacle to the achieve ment of Labor's ideals. From this belief and with a simple faith in the power of reason and the justice of its course Labor developed a new dream: that newspapers owned and run by the labour movement would destroy the misconceptions sold by the capitalist press, and awaken the desire in the people for a new world…
