Years of Paleoecological History from Lake Chichancanab, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Mangrove dynamics driven by Late Holocene drought at Laguna Bacalar, Mexico
Laguna Bacalar, one of Mexico's most significant near-coast lakes, remains underexplored in the context of its Late Holocene paleoecology. A 2,40 m long core was retrieved in northern Laguna Bacalar. Palynological and geochemical proxies were isolated and analyzed. Our findings reveal the intricate paleoecological dynamics and hydrodynamic shifts of this vital area in southeastern Mexico. Climate and ecological changes delineate three pivotal pha…
Mangrove history during middle- and late-Holocene in Pacific south-eastern Mexico
A paleoecological analysis of a 6-m-long sedimentary sequence from the La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve (RBLE) from southern Pacific Mexico provides detailed information about past vegetation changes between ~6200 and 700 cal. yr BP. Highest percentages of mangrove pollen in pollen zone I (from ~6200 to 5400 cal. yr BP) suggest moister and warmer conditions than at present related with global rates of sea-level rise and northward position of the …
Geospatial analysis of pollen records from the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico
Climate drying and associated forest decline in the lowlands of northern Guatemala during the late Holocene
Palynological studies document forest disappearance during the late Holocene in the tropical Maya lowlands of northern Guatemala. The question remains as to whether this vegetation change was driven exclusively by anthropogenic deforestation, as previously suggested, or whether it was partly attributable to climate changes. We report multiple palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment proxies (pollen, geochemical, sedimentological) from sediment cores c…
Protracted drought during the late Holocene in the Lacandon rain forest, Mexico
Tropical forest and mangrove history from southeastern Mexico
Paleoecological and Climatic Changes of the Upper Lerma Basin, Central Mexico during the Holocene
The record of Almoloya Lake in the Upper Lerma basin starts with the deposition of the late Pleistocene Upper Toluca Pumice layer. The data from this interval indicate a period of climatic instability that lasted until 8500 cal yr B.P., when temperature conditions stabilized, although moisture fluctuations continued until 8000 cal yr B.P. Between 8500 and 5000 cal yr B.P. a temperate climate is indicated by dominance of Pinus . From 5000 to 3000 …
A Holocene vegetation history from lowland Guatemala
A 5.45-m core from Lake Peten-Itza, lowland Guatemala, contains a near-complete record of Holo cene sedimentation. The age-depth relationship for the core is based on AMS 14 C dating of terrestrial wood fragments and provides a reliable chronology in this karst region where hard-water lake error has typically confounded sediment geochronology. In the basal part of the sequence, pollen of the Moraceae-Urticaceae group dominate, indicating the pres…
