Change and transformation during the transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age along the capital region of the Danube
Review article of the PhD dissertation submitted in 2024 to the Archaeology Doctoral Programme, Doctoral School of History, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, and written under the supervision of Gábor V. Szabó. This study examines the transformation of settlement structures and material culture during the transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin, focusing on two large, single-layered sites along the Danube: a Mi…
From vessel to community
This paper attempts to reconstruct the use of fermenting vessels and their role in Middle Bronze Age communities. Vessels of this type can be found in the record of several periods of the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin but seem to be the most widespread in the Middle Bronze Age (2000/1900–1500/1400 cal BC). Storage vessels with internal knobs and special decoration have been associated with the production of dairy products or the fermentation…
Egy edénytől a közösségig
Jelen tanulmány középpontjában a pácolóedények felhasználásának, valamint a középső bronzkori közösségekben betöltött szerepének rekonstruálási kísérlete áll. Az edénytípus a bronzkor több periódusában is fellelhető, azonban használata a középső bronzkorban (2000/1900–1500/1400 cal BC) tűnik a legelterjedtebbnek. A belső bütykökkel és különleges díszítéssel ellátott tárolóedényeket korábban tejtermékek készítésével vagy alkoholos italok erjesztés…
The results of a non-destructive site exploration and a rescue excavation at the site of Pusztaszabolcs-Dohányos völgy északi part
It is only possible in rare cases to compare aerial photographs, fieldwork data, surveys of two types of magnetometer measurements, and metal detector surveys of a site with the results of a previous rescue excavation. The cooperation of the Castle Headquaters Integrated Developement Centre, the Szent István Király Museum of Székesfehérvár, and the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at the Eötvös Loránd University made the discovery of the mult…
Test excavation of the “pseudo-ditch” system of the Late Neolithic settlement complex at Öcsöd-Kováshalom on the Great Hungarian Plain
In 2018, the RGK’s research team led by Knut Rassmann undertook the magnetometer survey of the Late Neolithic site of Öcsöd-Kováshalom over a roughly 65 ha large area. An enclosure system of three concentric semi-circular ditches was detected around the tell-like mound that formed the core of the settlement. In order to resolve these issues, we organised a small field school excavation with the support of the RGK and with the participation of the…
A stratigraphic sequence of six thousand years
Árpád period pit houses with a stone oven, Roman period brick graves and public baths, debris from Middle Bronze Age buildings, an Early Bronze Age cemetery, and Late Copper Age clay pit complexes – the thousands of archaeological features that appeared one below the other in a several metres thick stratigraphic sequence, and the nearly thousand boxes of finds are only one side of the coin. The other is represented by the constant roar of the mac…
Hatezer év rétegsora
Árpád-kori kőkemencés veremházak, római kori téglasírok és közfürdő, középső bronzkori épületek omladékai, kora bronzkori temető, késő rézkori agyagnyerő komplexumok. A több méter vastag rétegsorban egymás alatt jelentkező sok ezer régészeti jelenség, valamint csaknem ezer láda leletanyag csupán az érem egyik oldalát jelenti. A folyamatosan zúgó gépek, a betontörés fülsüketítő robaja és porfelhője, a HÉV ütemes hangja, külföldi építőmunkások mora…
Preliminary report on the excavation of the site Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya
Colleagues of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University performed a rescue excavation at the site of Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya in 2018, within the series of excavations preceding the construction of the M44 motorway. Neolithic, Sarmatian, and Avar Age settlement sections and burials came to light on the hills situated on the left bank of the Tisza River. This preliminary report presents their most important finds and p…
Examination and possible interpretations of a Middle Bronze Age structured deposition
Ceramic depositions occur frequently in the Bronze Age throughout the Carpathian Basin, however, their characteristics and composition can vary between periods, cultures and regions. Thus there could be many theories and interpretations offered for the reasons behind hiding these depots. At the site of Budajenő, Hegyiszántók a structured deposition dating to the final phase of the Middle Bronze Age came to light, which is not only unique in terms…

Jealousy in Firstborn Toddlers within the Context of the Primary Family Triad
Childhood jealousy has typically been examined in a limited number of jealousy‐evoking contexts and mainly with the mother only, thus providing a narrow view on the manifestations of jealousy. The aim of the present article is to examine childhood jealousy within parent–child dyads and (mother–father–child) triads and across multiple contexts. The sample included 87 D utch families with a toddler (38 girls, 49 boys, M age : 23 months). Children w…
