  • Moedig in de Marge

Open Access•Bart van der Steen, Aela Andrée et al.•ARTICLE•TSEG/ Low Countries Journal of…•2024

This paper reconstructs the history of revolutionary socialists in the city of Leiden during the interbellum in order to test the efficacy of the concept of ‘political family’ for analyzing historical political cultures. The revolutionary socialist movement split from the official communist movement in the late 1920s and was active throughout the 1930s. It was critical of Stalin, sympathized with Trotsky and supported the radical trade union Nati…

  • Travelling Barricades

    Open Access•Bart van der Steen•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2024•References: 5

This paper reconstructs and compares four squatter conflicts in Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Copenhagen and Hamburg during the 1980s in which squatters defended themselves from eviction from occupied houses by barricading entire streets. Remarkable similarities can be observed in how these conflicts developed. Was this the result of international contacts between the squatters, of similarities between the cities, or did the construction of barricades set…

  • Living in Legends

    Open Access•Bart van der Steen•ARTICLE•German History•2024

During the 1980s, a conflict over eight occupied houses in the Hafenstraße in Hamburg developed into one of the most contested squatter struggles in West Germany and strongly resonated with squatters abroad. As the conflict escalated, a long-drawn-out discussion unfolded between Hamburg’s squatters, authorities, media and inhabitants over who the squatters were and how the city should deal with them. This article sets out to explain why these eig…

  • Narratives, Violence, and Social Conflicts

Bart van der Steen•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2024

The relationship between activism, repression, and violent escalation is central to social movement scholarship. The strategic reasons for movements to place “internal brakes” on violence have been mapped, but less is known about how movements create and enforce these brakes. This article argues that narratives play a central role in this process and demonstrates how narratives both enabled and limited violent activism in the 1980s autonomist squ…

  • Framing Contests Between Dutch Activists and Local News Media

Open Access•Bart van der Steen, Peter Burger et al.•ARTICLE•TMG Journal for Media History•2021

In order to gain a better understanding of the dynamics between activists and mainstream media, this paper analyses the ways in which the Dutch, Leiden-based anarchist collective Eurodusnie (1997–2002) responded to negative publicity. While many have described the relationship between social movements and the mass media as asymmetric, assigning a dominant role to mass media, our paper emphasises the agency of a local social movement and the strat…

  • The image of the foreign squatter

Open Access•Bart van der Steen, Blerina Nimanaj et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2021•References: 2

Based on a systematic analysis of local mainstream and activist media, this article reconstructs conflicts over the framing of British and Irish squatters in Leiden during the 1990s. During this decade, several hundreds of English-speaking youths travelled to Leiden and surrounding villages to work as seasonal labourers. Often lacking access to regular housing, many of them resorted to squatting houses and as a result got involved in local urban …

Open Access•Elisa Hendriks, Blerina Nimanaj et al.•ARTICLE•TSEG/ Low Countries Journal of…•2020

In the early 1990s, several hundreds of predominantly working-class British and Irish youths moved to Leiden to work as seasonal laborers in the region’s floral industry. Because it was difficult to gain access to regular housing, a large number of them squatted houses in and around the city. Local newspapers paid much attention to the British squatters, who were often described as organizers of rave parties, consumers of illicit drugs and causer…

Open Access•Bart van der Steen, Charlotte van Rooden et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban History•2020

This article investigates the development of squatting and house occupations in the Dutch city of Leiden during the 1970s to challenge stereotypical images of squatting and squatter protest in the Netherlands and beyond. Based on a historical analysis of 344 newspaper articles on squatting in the middle-sized city of Leiden from 1970 to 1980, this research not only shows the diversity of the squatter population and the ways in which the authoriti…
