New Zealand's tobacco control strategies can provide valuable insights for global health coalitions. Future research should focus on the sustainability and resilience of science-driven public health policies
Trusting and Discomfort
This article presents my deliberations on the challenges of issues of trusting and discomfort in decolonizing research, and in particular where non-Indigenous researchers work in partnership with Indigenous scholars and/or Indigenous communities. It draws on the epistemological and methodological decolonizing process of The Tipuna Project as a significant and thoughtful means of conducting decolonizing research that has transformative, reparative…
Estranged Pioneers
In today’s contentious climate, when diversity is both acclaimed and assaulted, this book examines what it means for people of color to lead in diverse multiracial spaces. Specifically, it examines how pastors of color lead the scarce but growing numbers of multiracial congregations in the United States. The book answers the following questions: What does it mean for pastors of color to lead in multiracial spaces? Who are these pastors of color t…

The Asian Summer Monsoon
Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability significantly affects hydro-climate, and thus socio-economics, in the East Asian region, where nearly one-third of the global population resides. Over the last two decades, speleothem δ18O records from China have been utilized to reconstruct ASM variability and its underlying forcing mechanisms on orbital to seasonal timescales. Here, we use the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis database (SISAL_v1) …

Tuning into Precious
This essay offers an intertextual analysis of Lee Daniels's Precious (2009) that places the film within a popular matrix of black feminist cultural production since the 1960s, viewing the musical and visual elements of the conversion scene through the lens of a black feminist narrative analysis that historicizes the film within the emergence of a genre that I call the black women's empowerment adaptation. I argue that understanding adaptation as …
Extremely Large Variations of Atmospheric 14 C Concentration During the Last Glacial Period
A long record of atmospheric 14 C concentration, from 45 to 11 thousand years ago (ka), was obtained from a stalagmite with thermal-ionization mass-spectrometric 230 Th and accelerator mass-spectrometric 14 C measurements. This record reveals highly elevated Δ 14 C between 45 and 33 ka, portions of which may correlate with peaks in cosmogenic 36 Cl and 10 Be isotopes observed in polar ice cores. Superimposed on this broad peak of Δ 14 C are sever…

Men and Women in Qing China
Men and Women in Qing China is an analysis of Chinese prescriptions of gender as represented in Cao Xueqin's famous eighteenth century Chinese novel of manners, The Red Chamber Dream or The Story of the Stone. Drawing on feminist literary critical methods it examines Qing notions of masculinity and femininity, including themes such as bisexuality, motherhood, virginity and purity, and gender and power. Its central aim is to challenge the common a…
