Twenty-first century knowledge mapping on oral diseases and physical activity/exercise, trends, gaps, and future perspectives
Maintenance and improvement of an individual's overall well-being require a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses everything from oral health care to regular physical exercise. The notion that poor oral health can influence general health and athletic performance has sparked an interest in this relationship. This study offers an overview of relevant research and a knowledge map,and discusses publication metrics and key topics concerning the…
Maternal methylmercury exposure during early-life periods adversely affects mature enamel structure of offspring rats at human exposure levels
Although there are many studies on the health effects of methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity during in utero and early development, little is known about its effects on mineralized tissues present in the oral cavity, such as enamel structure. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of MeHg exposure on the physico-chemical, ultrastructural and functional properties of mature tooth enamel. Specifically, we studied offspring of mothers exposed to MeHg…
Perception of elementary school teachers on dental traumatism
Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are highly prevalent lesions in the school environment and its consequences can negatively affect psychological well-being. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the perception and management of TDI cases by public elementary school teachers in the city of Belém, in Amazon region. Data were collected, focusing on previous training in first aid on TDI, and its effect on their knowledge and attitudes …
Association Between Diabetic Retinopathy and Periodontitis—A Systematic Review
Background: Diabetic retinopathy is a common microvascular complication in diabetic patients and is considered the main cause of visual loss worldwide. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition, which compromises dental supporting tissues. The chronic bacterial challenge in periodontitis is a persistent source of inflammatory mediators that may be associated with insulin resistance, increasing the risk of complications of diabetes mellitu…

Physical, Chemical, and Immunohistochemical Investigation of the Damage to Salivary Glands in a Model of Intoxication with Aluminium Citrate
Aluminum absorption leads to deposits in several tissues. In this study, we have investigated, to our knowledge for the first time, aluminum deposition in the salivary glands in addition to the resultant cellular changes in the parotid and submandibular salivary glands in a model of chronic intoxication with aluminum citrate in rats. Aluminum deposits were observed in the parotid and submandibular glands. Immunohistochemical evaluation of cytoker…
Evaluation of the Effects of Chronic Intoxication with Inorganic Mercury on Memory and Motor Control in Rats
The aims of this study were to evaluate whether chronic intoxication with mercury chloride (HgCl2), in a low concentration over a long time, can be deposited in the central nervous tissue and to determine if this exposure induces motor and cognitive impairments. Twenty animals were intoxicated for 45 days at a dose of 0.375 mg/kg/day. After this period, the animals underwent a battery of behavioral tests, in a sequence of open field, social recog…
