  • Representation and Democracy in the Metaphysics of Morals: Kant’s Late Answer to the ‘Problem’ of Sovereignty

    Open Access•Susan Shell, Susan Meld Shell•ARTICLE•Kantian Review•2025

A rightful condition, according to Kant, requires both a law to limit the freedom of each and a ruler to enforce that limit, a ruler who cannot himself be subject to the law’s enforcement without ceasing to perform his primary function. Kant placed his hopes, circa 1784, in a future ruler who combined worldly experience, a ‘correct conception’ of a possible constitution, and, above all, the good will to accept it. Subsequent historical events, al…

  • ‘Nachschrift eines Freundes’: Kant on Language, Friendship and the Concept of a People

    Open Access•Susan Shell, Susan Meld Shell•ARTICLE•Kantian Review•2010

Kant's brief ‘Postscript of a Friend’ serves as a peculiar coda to his life work. The last of Kant's writing to be published during his lifetime, it is both a friendly endorsement of Christian Gottlieb Mielcke's newly competed Lithuanian–German and German–Lithuanian Dictionary and a plea in Kant's own name for the preservation of minority languages, Lithuanian in particular. This support for minority languages has no visible precedent in his earl…

  • A Determined Stand: "Freedom & Security in Fichte's "Science of Right

    Susan Shell, Susan Meld Shell•ARTICLE•Polity•1992

The concept of state elaborated by Fichte in Science of Right represents a watershed in the history of liberal, romantic, and socialist thought. Fichte embraces a unique understanding of freedom, this article argues, that enables him to avoid some of the pitfalls of Kantian dualism and also gives new emphasis to the dignity of labor. But the price of his new understading, the author concludes, is an even more vexing series of theoretical and prac…

  • Meier on Strauss and Schmitt

Open Access•Susan Shell, Susan Meld Shell•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•1991

Heinrich Meier 's careful and illuminating study of the relation between Carl Schmitt and Leo Strauss should come as something of a revelation to many* Through a painstaking analysis of the three editions of Schmitt's influential Concept of the Political , Meier uncovers a heretofore largely overlooked “dialogue,” albeit one partly conducted “in absentia.” As Meier observes Schmitt is one of a relatively small number of contemporaries whose work …
