Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) plots
The clinical performance of a laboratory test can be described in terms of diagnostic accuracy, or the ability to correctly classify subjects into clinically relevant subgroups. Diagnostic accuracy refers to the quality of the information provided by the classification device and should be distinguished from the usefulness, or actual practical value, of the information. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) plots provide a pure index of accurac…
The reduction of abnormal behaviors in individually housed rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) with a foraging/grooming board
A new environmental enrichment device, termed a “foraging/grooming board,” was presented to 8 individually housed rhesus monkeys for the explicit purpose of reducing the level of aberrant behaviors manifested by these animals. The device, consisting of a piece of plexiglass covered with artificial fleece, had particles of food treats rubbed into it and was attached to the outside of each animal's home cage. All animals foraged from the board to t…
Ethics and Writing Native American History
In volume 7, number 1 (1983) of this journal there appeared three reviews of People of the Sacred Mountain, a book by Father Peter J. Powell. The reviews raised a number of controversial questions. For a student of Cheyenne culture and history, these reviews point to at least three important issues that warrant commentary. First, there is the question of what constitutes supereminent Native American historical scholarship. Second, there is the qu…
The stable equivalent population, age composition, and Fisher’s reproductive value function
This paper deals with a further analysis of the stable equivalent population for human populations. It first shows that the arithmetic difference between the size of the stable equivalent population and the actual population captures the total prospective contribution of age composition to the growth of the present population, if fertility and mortality rates are held constant at their current levels. The second part of the paper examines Fisher’…
