  • Non-inclusive language in human subjects questionnaires

Open Access•Isabella Hernandez, Velia Nuñez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Adverse health outcomes disproportionately affect marginalized populations. Utilizing culturally and socially conscious research materials that are inclusive of various identities and experiences is necessary to help remediate these disparities. Our review finds compelling evidence of bias in many widely used data collection instruments. Recommendations for conducting more inclusive science are discussed

  • The Neolithic Settlement on Tsoungiza at Ancient Nemea

Dabney Dabney, Allen Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Hesperia The Journal of the…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article documents the nature, size, and date of the Neolithic settlement on Tsoungiza at ancient Nemea and reports the results of the ceramic, ground stone tool, archaeobotanical, and human osteological analyses. The results of excavations on Tsoungiza in 1974, 1975, 1981, 1982, and 1984, and a restudy of the finds discovered by Carl W. Blegen in 1925–1926, show that the site was an open-air settlement, not a cave; was much larger than previ…

  • Debt and Entanglements Between the Wars

Open Access•Thomas J Sargent, International Monetary Fund et al.•BOOK•Debt and Entanglements Between…•2019

The seven chapters in this volume tell stories about correlated macroeconomic and political events that occurred in six countries and four Dominions of the British Commonwealth between 1914 and 1940. By a story, I mean a collection of observations ordered in time together with causal interpretations that come from projecting the observations onto a theory. Correlations among our stories arise partly from the international aspects of the events be…

  • Surviving the African Anthropocene

Timothy Wright, Wright Wright•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2019

Matthew Omelsky has recently coined the term "African Anthropocene" to describe how the intertwined crises wrought by global capitalism and man-made ecological disaster have disproportionately affected the African continent. This paper discusses a short story collection by the Ugandan writer Dilman Dila, A Killing in the Sun (2014), as one instance of an African aesthetics that uniquely registers and responds to this dual crisis. I focus in parti…

  • George Eliot's Vagueness

    Wright Wright•ARTICLE•Victorian Studies•2014•References: 8

This essay examines George Eliot's preoccupation with the logical problem of vagueness: the idea that our language is riddled with blurry concepts and fuzzy truth-conditions that are impossible to circumscribe with the rigorous precision required by our binary logic. By reading Middlemarch (1872–73) alongside nineteenth-and twentieth-century work in logic and the philosophy of language (George Boole, John Venn, Gottlob Frege, and Ludwig Wittgenst…

  • Invasive Species and the Loss of Beta Diversity

    Wright Wright•ARTICLE•Ethics & the Environment•2011

Why should we avoid introducing invasive species? In this paper I argue that in addition to the more ordinary and visible types of harm that invasive species cause, they also cause a reduction in a particular kind of biodiversity—that of beta diversity. Rather than simply measuring the number of species found in a particular region, beta diversity measures the differences in the species found between regions. This difference between regions can b…

  • The Commemoration of Defeat and the Formation of a Nation in the Hebrew Bible

    Wright Wright•ARTICLE•Prooftexts•2009

This article argues that the emergence of a "national" consciousness in Israel and Judah was originally fueled by many factors, such as a confined and remote core territory, a history of tribal allegiances, language, culture, law, cult, and ongoing military conflicts. But more important than these factors or any institution of statecraft was the anticipation of defeat and defeat itself. When life could not continue as usual, and the state armies …

  • Family centres

    Open Access•Batchelor Batchelor, Gould Gould et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•1999•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The development of child care policy has been characterized by debates organized along various intersecting constructs such as universal vs. selective services and prevention vs. treatment. Family centres, as a site of service delivery, represent a point of intersection of many of these arguments. Their role is contested between protagonists of all positions within the child care policy debates: whether they should be professionally managed, led …
