The life and death of Greek local scripts ; not so long durée
In this paper, I outline what I believe to be the salient aspects of the rise, and in particular the survival and demise of the individual epichoric or local scripts in the Greek world, c.750-350 BC. Amphorae and text
«Texts » on amphorae of the archaic to early classical period appear in various media, on different parts of the jar and on a range of amphora types. Therein distinct patterns of usage are few, but some may be noted, such as «long » texts on SOS and à la brosse jars, underfoot marks on North Greek, and pre-firing ones on Samian. Few texts can help us pinpoint the origin of the jars themselves, but some anomalous ones are of individual interest. T…
Building Z at Kommos
Building Z at Kommos is built into one of the Late Minoan shipsheds of Building P; its major phase of use is in the Middle Geometric period. The pottery from the building, including earlier Iron Age material and some from post-use deposition, is fully published here. The totality gives the opportunity of seeing the various contemporary products of the Mesara in fuller detail than is provided by other published sets of material. The purpose of the…
A geometric graffito from Eretria
Two joining sherds of an East Greek ‘proto-Bird Bowl’, found in Dr Andreiomenou's excavations at Eretria, bear a three-line graffito text very similar in structure, if not in content, to that on Nestor's cup from Pithekoussai. The piece must be of approximately the same date
Geometric Squares
One type of male figure on Attic Late Geometric vases has a rectangular rather than triangular torso. the general interpretation of this shape as a square shield is not valid, and it is already recognised that we have some examples which represent a bell‐corslet and a chiton. the warriors on the chariots in the main frieze of an amphora by the Anavysos painter in the British Museum appear to be wearing non‐metallic corslets. A review of extant ma…
