  • Cohabitants, Captives, or Trade

    Richard L Fishel•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2018

The Marseton #2 site is a Weaver ring midden in the Mississippi Valley of Mercer County, Illinois, that was buried by a catastrophic flood event a few centuries after the site had been abandoned. Analysis of the more than 740,000 ceramic items from the village provides insights as to Weaver interactions with other non-Weaver early Late Woodland groups of the region. While the presence of non-Weaver ceramics at the village might represent trade it…

  • War of 1812 Buttons from Fort Johnson and Cantonment Davis, Hancock County, Illinois

    Richard L Fishel•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2012•References: 4

Recent archaeological investigations at Fort Johnson and Cantonment Davis, two War of 1812–era American military posts in Hancock County, Illinois, uncovered a diverse artifact assemblage that includes a wide array of button types. Of the 318 recovered buttons, 68 percent exhibit military insignias, including those attributed to the infantry, army general service, riflemen, artillery, light artillery, and dragoons. In addition to describing the a…

  • Establishing the Populations and Occupation Spans of Fort Johnson and Cantonment Davis, Hancock County, Illinois

    Richard L Fishel•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2012•References: 1

Fort Johnson and Cantonment Davis are two short-term War of 1812–era American military posts located above the east bank of the Mississippi River in Hancock County, Illinois, within what was then the western frontier of the United States. Because little has been written regarding the fort and the cantonment, most details of their occupations are poorly documented and occasionally contradictory. A review of the documents associated with the two mi…

  • Sourcing Red Pipestone Artifacts from Oneota Villages in the Little Sioux Valley of Northwest Iowa

    Richard L Fishel, Sarah U Wisseman et al.•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 16

The exchange of some Oneota red pipestone artifacts commonly, but sometimes incorrectly, identified as manufactured from catlinite from southwest Minnesota, likely created fictive kinship alliances between unrelated groups from ca. A.D. 1450 into the early 1700s. Researchers have determined, however, that red pipestone raw material occurs across a wide area within the United States and Canada. Determining the provenance of this red pipestone raw …

    Open Access•Richard L Fishel•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 19

The Phipps site (13CK21) in northwest Iowa contains evidence of interaction between Middle Mississippian and Middle Missouri peoples. Excavations in 1994 uncovered eight features and recovered more than 21,000 sherds and nearly 10,000 faunal elements. The assemblage from one feature includes more than 260 broken and splintered raptor tarsometatarsi, approximately 100 raptor phalanges, and more than 80 raptor talons, plus shell beads, red ocher-st…
