Continuities in the Study of Ecological Succession
This paper concerns the problem of how residential succession affects the character of one set of local organizations: small businesses in racially changing neighborhoods. A key issue examined is the extent to which the causes and consequences of residential succession account also for the succession of small-busines organizations. Command, Control, and Charisma
This paper examines several features of American police systems that account for some variation and change in command structures and the personal charisma of the chief. Ways that the bureaucratization of the police have served to commit officers to an occupational organization, to an occupational community, and to norms of subordination and service in such a way that these commitments take precedence over extra-occupational ones are also examined…
Occupational Segregation in a Metropolitan School System
The relationship between socioeconomic levels of close friends, the extent to which this relationship may be a consequence of socioeconomic segregation of schools, and the extent to which school segregation is a consequence of residential segregation in the larger community are examined for the Nashville, Tennessee, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area male population in grades 7-12. The fact than boys tend to choose their best friends from the…

There are no significant differences of status in types of interpersonal contact or time spent in contact which are independent of residential settings. Among the residential groups, classified by contacts, significant differences in exposure to mass…

Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency. II. An Appraisal of the Research Methods
There are no adequate theoretical or methodological criteria for evaluating the findings of the recent research work of the Gluecks. Nevertheless, it must be noted in judging their work that the delinquents and non delinquents are poorly matched on neighborhood environmental factors and that the role of primary group relationship and controls and of secondary institutions in structuring personality and enforcing behavior in conformity with a set …

The Accuracy, Efficiency, and Validity of a Prediction Instrument
Prognostic instruments were developed to predict the recidivism of white male juvenile delinquent probationers, and predictions were made for a follow-up sample of cases. The results suggest that an accurate and efficient prediction instrument calls for a small number of stable items from efficient factors having a relatively high association with the criterion. These items are then used to predict an event in a population homegeneous with respec…
