Economic and econometric methods to measure the illicit tobacco trade
This scoping review aimed to identify suitable economic and econometric methods for measuring the illicit tobacco trade. We searched six key databases for public health and economics papers (PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, EconLit, ABI/Inform, and Medline), two economic working paper platforms (SSRN and IDEAS), and grey literature via Google and expert-identified articles. Initial screening was undertaken by all authors, with at least three authors condu…
Vaping cessation strategies and triggers for relapse amongst people from New Zealand who have vaped
Incentivised physical activity intervention promoting daily steps among university employees in the workplace through a team-based competition
Introduction: The benefits of walking on health and well-being is well established and regarded as the most accessible form of physical activity (PA) that most individuals can incorporate into their lives. Despite the benefits, the impact of a competitive walking intervention combined with a prize incentive in the workplace is yet to be established. The aim of this intervention was to promote PA among university employees through teams-based comp…
A qualitative study of using nicotine products for smoking cessation after discharge from residential drug and alcohol treatment in Australia
‘ It's somewhere here, isn't it’? The provision of information and health warnings for alcoholic beverages sold online in New Zealand and the United Kingdom
Effectiveness of nicotine salt vapes, cytisine, and a combination of these products, for smoking cessation in New Zealand
NCT05311085 ClinicalTrials.gov. Registered 5th April, 2022
Workplace Physical Activity Barriers and Facilitators
These findings contribute to the limited literature in terms of evaluating obstacles and facilitators of university employees to encourage engagement with PA in the workplace. These findings can be applied to form PA, health, and wellbeing-related interventions specifically targeting these identified barriers that are experienced in the workplace and thereby potentially reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity
Betel Nut Use in Vanuatu
Background: Betel nut chewing is a public health concern in the Asia-Pacific region and is an emerging issue in Vanuatu. Despite the significant health risks associated with betel nut chewing, few interventions have been undertaken to reduce its harm. Objectives: To investigate betel nut use in Vanuatu and to identify opportunities to reduce its harm and possible interventions, framing the responses using the World Health Organization’s MPOWER to…

Reducing the nicotine content of combusted tobacco products sold in New Zealand
Large reductions in nicotine content could dramatically reduce reinforcement from and dependence on cigarettes. In this article, we summarise the potential benefits of reducing nicotine in combusted tobacco and address some of the common concerns. We focus specifically on New Zealand because it may be ideally situated to implement such a policy. The available data suggest that, in current smokers, very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes decre…
Exploring comorbid use of marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol among 14 to 15-year-olds
The results identify a core group of adolescents sharing common characteristics who frequently engage in comorbid substance use behaviours. More sophisticated and wider interventions addressing multiple substances are required, especially for marijuana and tobacco use
‘We’ve just learnt to put up with it’
A number of psychological and sociocultural factors have been suggested to influence athletes’ willingness to play despite being injured. Investigation of this phenomenon is undertaken optimally at the time when athletes are injured; however, many studies have relied upon retrospective recall of feelings in individuals following recovery. This study aimed, through semi-structured existential-phenomenological interviews, to explore decision-making…
Using Incentives to Encourage Smoking Abstinence Among Pregnant Indigenous Women? A Feasibility Study
Abrupt nicotine reduction as an endgame policy
Smokers unmotivated to quit reduce their usual cigarette consumption (and thus nicotine exposure) when VLNC cigarettes are made available at a significantly reduced price
Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation
Getting off the starting blocks
This paper is an example of the outcomes from an IPA analysis of a physical activity referral scheme (PARS) non–completer. It demonstrates the value of conducting qualitative research to better understand who a non–completer is, how to support them to become physically active thus improving the PARS experience by listening to the expert; the patient

Study protocol for a non-inferiority trial of cytisine versus nicotine replacement therapy in people motivated to stop smoking
Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12610000590066)
Study protocol for a randomised trial of nicotine-free cigarettes as an adjunct to usual NRT-based cessation practice, in people who wish to stop smoking
Smoking prevalence in New Zealand has changed little in recent years (particularly in Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand) and additional options for smokers who want to quit are needed. Although a variety of methods are available to help, many are expensive, have side effects, and despite their use most quit attempts still fail. This trial will test the balance of benefits and risks of a new strategy for people to overcome nicotine depen…
The study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a family-centred tobacco control program about environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) to reduce respiratory illness in Indigenous infants
Interventions aimed at reducing exposure of Indigenous children to ETS have the potential for significant benefits for Indigenous communities. There is currently a dearth of evidence for the effect of tobacco control interventions to reduce children's exposure to ETS among Indigenous populations. This study will provide high-quality evidence of the efficacy of a family-centred tobacco control program on ETS to reduce respiratory illness. Outcomes…
Smoke-free restaurants
Objective: To determine the extent to which implementation of an evidence based treatment, antithrombotic treatment in atrial fibrillation, is possible in general practice. Design: Audit and qualitative study of patients with atrial fibrillation and an educational intervention for patients judged eligible for antithrombotic treatment. Setting: South east England. Subjects: 56 patients with a history of atrial fibrillation. Interventions: Assessme…
