  • Paleoecology and Geoarchaeology at El Palmar and the El Zotz Region, Guatemala

    Open Access•Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach, Sheryl Luzzadder‐beach et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 21

A new paleoecology record from the El Palmar Cival adds to the emerging geoarchaeological record of El Zotz, Guatemala. El Palmar's 3 m stratigraphic record began in the Archaic period before 1500 B.C. at or just before initial Maya impacts. From the lowest level, Late Archaic organic deposition, with evidence for diverse tropical forest and a steady water table, transitioned to Early Preclassic clay deposition, decreased forest taxa, three known…

  • Climatic and Environmental Variability in the Rise of Maya Civilization

    Open Access•Richard D Hansen, Steven R Bozarth et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2002•Cited by: 27

Archaeological and ecological investigations in the Mirador Basin of northern Guatemala have recovered archaeological, phytolith, palynological, and pedological data relevant to the early occupation and development of Maya civilization in a specific environmental matrix. Fluctuation in vegetation types as evident in cores and archaeological profiles suggest that the seasonally wet, forested bajo environment currently found in the northern Peten w…

  • Maize (Zea mays) Cob Phytoliths From A Central Kansas Great Bend Aspect Archaeological Site

    Steven R Bozarth, Steven Bozarth•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1993•Cited by: 7•References: 1

This study describes diagnostic maize cob phytoliths. The classification was derived from a comparative study of an extensive phytolith reference collection of traditional cultigens and native Kansas flora. Phytolith isolates from sediment samples collected in a Great Bend Aspect village (14MN328) in central Kansas were analyzed to test the feasibility of recovering maize cob phytoliths in an archaeological site in the Great Plains. Diagnostic ma…

  • Archaeological Investigations in the Clinton Lake Project Area, Northeastern Kansas, National Register Evaluation of 27 Prehistoric Sites

Mary J Adair, Steven R Bozarth et al.•REPORT•1987•Cited by: 1

This report describes archaeological investigations at 27 prehistoric sites in the Clinton Lake Project Area, Douglas and Shawnee Counties, Kansas. The investigations were undertaken in order to determine the eligibility of the sites for the National Register of Historic Places. The results of the field and laboratory procedures have resulted in the following conclusions: The sites span at least the last 2000 to 3000 years of human history in the…
