  • Application of a Global Environmental Equity Index in Montreal

Mathieu Carrier, Philippe Apparicio et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 101

Urban living environments are known to influence human well-being and health. The literature on environmental equity focuses especially on the distribution of nuisances and resources, which, because of the unequal spatial distribution of different social groups, leads to an increased exposure to risks or to less access to beneficial elements for certain populations. Little work has been done on the multidimensionality of different environmental b…

  • Lung cancer risk among workers in the construction industry

Open Access•Aude Lacourt, Javier Pintos et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Compared with other blue collar workers, there was only a slight increased risk of lung cancer for subjects who ever held an occupation in the construction industry. The analyses of agents within the construction industry produced imprecise estimates of risk, but nevertheless pointed to some plausible associations. Excess risks for asbestos and silica were in line with previous knowledge. The possible excess risks with the other inorganic dusts r…

  • Estimating the Proportion of Cases of Lung Cancer Legally Attributable to Smoking

Jack Siemiatycki, Igor Karp et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Objectives. The plaintiffs’ lawyers for a class action suit, which was launched in Quebec on behalf of all patients with lung cancer whose disease was caused by cigarette smoking, asked us to estimate what proportion of lung cancer cases in Quebec, if they hypothetically could be individually evaluated, would satisfy the criterion that it is “more likely than not” that smoking caused the disease. Methods. The novel methodology we developed is bas…

  • Interocc case–control study

Open Access•Aude Lacourt, Elisabeth Cardis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Thus, there was no evidence that these exposures influence risk of glioma

  • Perineal use of talc and risk of ovarian cancer

Hilde Langseth, Susan E Hankinson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•References: 30

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynaecological neoplasms, especially in industrialised countries. The aetiology of the disease is not well understood, except that inherited mutations in the breast cancer genes BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 account for up to 10% of all cases, and child-bearing, oral contraceptive use and breast-feeding reduce the risk. Some environmental exposures, notably talc and asbestos, have been suspected as ovarian carcinogens

  • When to be Skeptical of Negative Studies

    Open Access•Suh‐Woan Hu, Suh-Woan Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•1999•References: 15

  • A randomized trial to evaluate the risk of gastrointestinal disease due to consumption of drinking water meeting current microbiological standards

Pierre Payment, L Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 8

BACKGROUND: This project directly and empirically measured the level of gastrointestinal (GI) illness related to the consumption of tapwater prepared from sewage-contaminated surface waters and meeting current water quality criteria. METHODS: A randomized intervention trial was carried out; 299 eligible households were supplied with domestic water filters (reverse-osmosis) that eliminate microbial and chemical contaminants from their water, and 3…

  • A comparison of mail, telephone, and home interview strategies for household health surveys

    Jack Siemiatycki•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1979•Cited by: 41•References: 12

The method of data collection in household health surveys can be a major determinant of cost and data quality. A survey strategy can comprise mail, telephone, or home interview methods, individually or in combination to follow up non-respondents. The purpose of this study in Montreal was to compare cost and data quality of various strategies. Strategies which began with mail or telephone contact, followed by the two other methods, provided respon…

  • Neural tube defects in Quebec. A search for evidence of 'clustering' in time and place

    Jack Siemiatycki, Alison D McDonald•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1972•References: 7

An infection which could explain these findings might show fluctuations in incidence which would not be synchronous nor attain the same level in all parts of a large region. Its teratological results would be expected to show clustering in time and place. Pleydell (1960) observed clusters of cases of anen- cephaly, but the method he used did not permit a statistical assessment of the probability that these were chance occurrences. Since the execu…
