  • Humans and climate in ritualized landscapes, the case of Lake Tota in the eastern highlands of Colombia

    Open Access•Maria I Velez, Jorge Salgado et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Tota is an Andean lake located in the Altiplano of the Eastern Andes of Colombia where socio-politically hierarchical societies of the Herrera and Muisca, flourished for millennia. To them, the lake and surrounding forest were places used for diverse of activities including religious rituals. In this study we produced a multi-proxy paleolimnological reconstruction using diatoms, isotopes, and geochemistry, to try to understand the lake’s pathways…

  • Response of shallow lakes in the arid-semiarid Pampas of Argentina to Late Holocene hydroclimatic change

    Open Access•Carina Seitz, Maria I Velez et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Novel responses of diatoms in neotropical mountain lakes to indigenous and post-European occupation

    Open Access•Maria I Velez, Jorge Salgado et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 54

  • Paleoclimate support for a persistent dry island effect in the Colombian Andes during the last 4700 years

    Open Access•Broxton W Bird, O M Rudloff et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

We investigated middle- and late-Holocene hydroclimate patterns in the Colombian Andes using indicators of watershed erosion (lithic abundance), precipitation intensity (% silt), lake-level variability (organic carbon and nitrogen, % sand, and diatoms), and fire frequency (fossil charcoal) from a ~4700-year-long sediment archive from Laguna de Ubaque, a small sub-alpine lake on the eastern flank of the eastern Colombian Andes. Our results indicat…

  • A deadly cocktail

    Open Access•Erik J de Boer, Maria I Velez et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Analyses of pollen, diatoms, XRF geochemistry, and pigments provide a unique window into how an insular ecosystem in Mauritius responded to an extreme drought event 4200 years ago. We provide a reconstruction of regional vegetation change and local wetland development under influence of sea level rise and inferred climate change between 4400 and 4100 cal. yr BP. Our multi-proxy data evidence a severe drought between 4190 and 4130 cal. yr BP, whic…

  • Middle to late Holocene relative sea level rise, climate variability and environmental change along the Colombian Caribbean coast

    Open Access•Maria I Velez, Jesús Escobar et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 8

We analyzed diatoms, lithology, and stable isotopes in a sediment core from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta lagoon to reveal the history of late Holocene relative sea level rise and the ontogeny of the lagoon on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. At ~5300 cal. yr BP, the area was characterized by shallow, freshwater ponds that were prone to seasonal flooding. From ~4250 to ~2060 cal. yr BP, these ponds became brackish as relative sea level began …

  • Major altitudinal shifts in Andean vegetation on the Amazonian flank show temporary loss of biota in the Holocene

    Open Access•Zaire González-Carranza, Henry Hooghiemstra et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 8•References: 8

The Lateglacial and Holocene vegetation history from the Amazonian flank of the south Colombian Andes has been studied in a 12 m long sediment core from Lake La Cocha (2780 m altitude). 18 AMS 14 C ages and 550 pollen samples yielded a history of a ~25 yr resolution. Montane forest extended up to 2200 m during the Lateglacial and shifted during a 10,000 yr period with millennial-scale and centennial-scale variability superimposed, to its present-…

  • Environmental and cultural changes in highland Guatemala inferred from Lake Amatitlán sediments

    Open Access•Maria I Velez, Jason H Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 6

We inferred the late Holocene environmental history of the Guatemala highlands from multiple lines of evidence in a sediment core from Lake Amatitlán. Inferred environmental changes are generally synchronous with archaeologically documented highland Maya cultural shifts. Population increases in the Middle Preclassic, Early Classic, and Late Postclassic are associated with deforestation and soil erosion. Land abandonment in the Late Preclassic, La…

  • Integrated diatom-pollen based Holocene environmental reconstruction of lake Las Margaritas, eastern savannas of Colombia

    Open Access•Maria I Velez, Martin Wille et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A multiproxy analysis that includes diatoms, pollen, element geochemistry, carbon content analysis, and radiocarbon dates was carried out on a core from Las Margaritas (3023‘N, 73 0 26’W) in order to reconstruct environmental and climatic change. This lake is hydrologically closed and is located in the transitional area between the Amazonian rainforest and the savannas of the eastern part of Colombia. It therefore offers an excellent opportunity …
