  • The Middle Paleolithic at Große Grotte (Blaubeuren, southern Germany). New Insights from Lithic Technology and Implication for Assemblage Classification

Open Access•Jens Axel Frick, Benjamin Schürch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2022

  • Technological features in the late Middle Paleolithic of the Côte Chalonnaise (Burgundy, France)

Open Access•Klaus Herkert, Jens Axel Frick•ARTICLE•Litikum•2020

While former typological studies drew a heterogeneous image for the Middle Paleolithic record of the Cte Chalonnaise region in southern Burgundy (France), recent research, re-evaluation of old collections, and comparative analysis from several Middle Paleolithic sites in the area were able to highlight a homogeneous pattern of litho-technological features. The assemblages have been evaluated according to their general composition, the identifiabl…

  • New study and complementary analyses on the Keilmesser with tranchet blow from the site Abri du Musée at Les Eyzies (Dordogne, France)

    Open Access•Jens Axel Frick•ARTICLE•Paléo•2020

This contribution summarizes the re-examination carried out in autumn 2018 on the find material of the Abri du Musée site and discusses the results. Initially, the aim of the analyses was to personally examine the already known and published material of the site. In the course of the work, however, it became evident that some units had previously only been processed to a limited extent. Therefore, we consider this work as explicitly intended to c…

  • Reflections on the term Micoquian in Western and Central Europe. Change in criteria, changed deductions, change in meaning, and its significance for current research

    Open Access•Jens Axel Frick•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 74

The primary objective of this contribution is to show the intricate ways of over 100 years of research concerning the term Micoquian and its multiple shifts in meaning. A detailed analysis of the course of the research history has made it possible to identify several tendencies of shifting meaning. This concerned both its position within the chronology, its spatial extent, and decisive assemblage components. The term Micoquian has been used to de…

  • A Late Middle Palaeolithic assemblage containing Levallois and bifacial objects from Saône-et-Loire, France

    Open Access•Jens Axel Frick•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 10

The site of Grotte de la Verpillière II, a rock shelter and corresponding cave tunnel, is situated in a cliff face of an Oxfordian massive, around 10 km West of Chalon-sur-Saône in Eastern France. The excavation at this site has recovered Middle Palaeolithic assemblages in three stratified sedimentological units. The richest of these assemblages derives from Geological Horizon (GH) 3 and is discussed here. It is preliminarily attributed to a Late…
