Thinking with Children: Climate Change and the Democratic Politics of Renewal and Risk
Climate change poses serious political challenges to liberal democracies arising from the problem of short-termism and the priority accorded to the vested interests of present adults over the vulnerabilities of children and future generations. This article aims to analyse the justifications, benefits, and policy implications of centring children in climate change politics in order to overcome these problems. The central argument is that ‘thinking…

Global Protests and Cosmopolitan Publicity: Challenging the Representative Claims of Nation-States
In the past decade, a global wave of protests has spread to both liberal democratic and authoritarian countries in which the representative claims of nation-states have been profoundly challenged. This article explores the extent to which these protest movements reflect cosmopolitan practices and possibilities. The central argument is that the protests created forms of ‘cosmopolitan publicity’ in which people engaged in transnationally connected …
The geopolitics of Antarctic governance: Sovereignty and strategic denial in Australia's Antarctic policy

This article examines the challenges for the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) in this context and the consequences for Australia's foreign policy in its dual ro…

The Sixth OCIS had a broad organizing theme of 'transition'…
Pragmatic ethics and the will to believe in cosmopolitanism
Recent conflicts and crises in international relations have tested the ethical commitments of many cosmopolitans. However, this article argues that cosmopolitanism can be morally compelling and practically useful if it is conceived pragmatically as a set of ideals that guide interactions concerning cross-border problems. It argues that a will to believe in cosmopolitanism can be rationally justified by historical achievements and present tendenci…
Pragmatic Cosmopolitanism
Building on the work of philosopher John Dewey, Bray develops an approach to transnational democracy called 'pragmatic cosmopolitanism'. He argues for an ideal of representative democracy that emphasi
Pragmatic Cosmopolitanism: A Deweyan Approach to Democracy beyond the Nation-State
Contemporary normative debates about democracy beyond nation-states have largely centred on the claims of two broad camps: the `liberal cosmopolitans' and the `deliberative democrats'. This article offers an alternative perspective developed from the work of philosopher John Dewey that I call `pragmatic cosmopolitanism'. First, my argument for pragmatic cosmopolitanism briefly outlines the Deweyan ethical ideas that serve as my normative groundin…
