  • Do newborns detect prosodic violations in an unfamiliar language at birth

Open Access•Caterina Marino, Jessica Gemignani et al.•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2025•References: 40

Experience with language starts prenatally, as the intrauterine environment allows speech prosody to get through. Martinez-Alvarez and colleagues (2023) demonstrated that newborns detect utterance-level prosodic violations in the language they heard prenatally, French. It remains unknown, however, whether this discrimination ability requires prenatal experience with a given language or whether newborns have an early sensitivity to the shapes of p…

  • Lactoferrin in the Prevention of Recurrent Respiratory Infections in Preschool Children

Open Access•Angela Pasinato, Mario Fama et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Few studies have evaluated the effect of bovine lactoferrin (bLf) on reducing respiratory infections in preschool children. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of bLf in preschool children with recurrent respiratory infections. Participants were randomly assigned bLf (n = 25) or control ( n = 25). Outcomes included respiratory infection episodes (RIEs), symptom duration, school absence and medication. Fifty children aged 4.2 ± 0…

  • Preliminary Evidence on Pulmonary Function after Asymptomatic and Mild Covid-19 in Children

Open Access•Costanza Di Chiara, Silvia Carraro et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

In our study, we observed that children and adolescents did not develop chronic respiratory symptoms and did not present lung function impairment after asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection

  • Enteral Linezolid as an Effective Option to Treat an Extremely Preterm Infant with Bacillus cereus Sepsis

Open Access•Chiara Minotti, Luca Bonadies et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

We report the safe and effective use of oral linezolid for treatment of Bacillus cereus sepsis in an extremely preterm neonate, previously fed with human donor milk, in which a Brevibacillus sp. was eventually found. Due to several predisposing factors, premature, very low birth weight newborns are extremely vulnerable to invasive infections by environmental pathogens. After vancomycin microbiologic treatment failure (despite adequate blood conce…

  • Daptomycin for Treatment of S. Epidermidis Endocarditis in an Extremely Preterm Neonate—Outcome and Perspectives

Open Access•Chiara Minotti, Ilaria Zuccon et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

With a considerable morbidity and mortality burden, infective endocarditis still represents a challenge for clinicians. This is a case of persistent Staphylococcus epidermidis endocarditis in an extremely preterm newborn. The infection, initially treated with vancomycin, was successfully cured with daptomycin. Its use was safe and effective, ensuring a complete remission without adverse effects

  • The “Hub and Spoke” (HandS) Ecmo for “Resuscitating” Neonates with Respiratory Life-Threatening Conditions

Open Access•Massimo A Padalino, Nicoletta Doglioni et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

HandS ECMO model for neonates with life-threatening conditions is effective and successful. A specialized multidisciplinary team and close cooperation between Hub and Spoke centers are essential for success

  • Psychological Wellbeing of Parents with Infants Admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit during Sars-CoV-2 Pandemic

Open Access•Laura Polloni, Francesco Cavallin et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

The current SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) pandemic is a sudden major stressor superimposed on pre-existing high distress in parents of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This study aimed to investigate the psychological wellbeing of NICU parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forty-four parents of 25 inpatients of the Padua University Hospital NICU were included from June 2020 to February 2021. At 7-14 days postpartum par…
