The Impact of Emotional Text and Sleep Consolidation on Incidental Vocabulary Learning in a Second Language
This study examined the effects of emotional valence (positive, negative, neutral) of English texts and sleep consolidation on the incidental acquisition of second language (L2) vocabulary in Chinese–English bilinguals. Each participant was exposed to three English texts with different emotional valences, each containing three English pseudowords. These pseudowords were also embedded into low‐constraint sentences used for the posttest. Eye‐tracki…
Adaptive compensatory mechanism in the regulation of language switching performance under negative emotional states
This study examines how emotional states interact with bilingual language control across different switching contexts. Chinese–English bilinguals performed cued and voluntary switching tasks under neutral, negative and positive emotional states. Behaviorally, negative states did not affect performance. Event-related potentials (ERPs) results revealed that in voluntary switching, negative state increased cue-locked late positive component (LPC) on…
The influence of L2 proficiency on orthographic coding flexibility is not a linear pattern
Brain potentials reveal activation and inhibition of the non-target L2 in bilinguals’ L1 context
Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: Using behavioral measurements and event-related potentials (ERPs), this study investigated the temporal dynamics of Chinese-Japanese bilinguals’ non-target second language (L2) activation and inhibition when they process their first language (L1) embedded with Chinese-Japanese homographs. Design/methodology/approach: Both Chinese-Japanese bilinguals and Chinese monolinguals were recruited to perform…
A study on the influencing factors of childbearing intention of working-age women—A case study of Shanghai
In recent years, our country is facing the increasingly serious problem of low fertility, our country has been in the trap of low fertility, and the problem of population development is imminent. How to effectively improve the current situation of low fertility rate and alleviate the impact of low fertility rate is an important topic that we need to study urgently. As the central city of China, Shanghai's fast-paced living environment and the rap…
The role of cognitive control in bilingual language comprehension
This study investigated the engagement of domain-general cognitive control during the comprehension of dense code-switching sentences. Stimulus-locked event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while L1-dominant Chinese–English bilinguals read switch and non-switch sentences. The results of the reading task revealed language dominance effects on the N400, left anterior negativity (LAN) and late positive component (LPC). The language dominance …
The impact of emotional states on bilingual language control in cued and voluntary switching contexts
Esculin ameliorates obesity-induced insulin resistance by improving adipose tissue remodeling and activating the IRS1/PI3K/AKT/GLUT4 pathway
Dynamic engagement of cognitive control in intra-sentential code-switching during comprehension
This study investigated whether the deployment of cognitive control was modulated by the intra-sentential code-switching types during comprehension. L1-dominant Chinese–English bilinguals were administered a self-paced reading task in two reading contexts – namely, alternation context and dense code-switching context. We assessed language switch cost and reversed language dominance effect in the self-paced reading task and examined how these lang…
