Becoming Arab
“The Arabs who Witnessed the Conquest Were Lost in the Passage of Time”
In al‐Bayān wa‐l‐iʿrāb ʿan mā fī arḍ Miṣr min al‐aʿrāb, or “The Book of Clear Arabic Expression regarding the Arab Tribes of Egypt”, a work that currently enjoys wide circulation, al‐Maqrīzī (d. 1442) listed the Arab and Berber tribes found in the late medieval Egyptian countryside according to their geographic locations. This paper sets out to explain al‐Maqrīzī’s aims in compiling the Bayān, considering the social and political context of the E…
Wissam H Halawi, Les Druzes en marge de l’islam
This monumental, ground-breaking book offers nothing short of a complete revision of the pre-modern history of the Druze as a religious and social community. Its point of departure is a re-assessment of the figure of al-Amir al-Sayyid (d. 1479), traditionally credited with a renaissance of the Druze faith and its institutions. This traditional view of al-Sayyid is based on uncritical examination of the available published sources, and hampered by…

Coming of Age in Medieval Egypt
Landscapes of the Islamic World
The aim of this volume, summed up in the concluding remarks by Alan Walmsley, is to highlight the importance of looking at the entirety of rural landscapes—not just the sites with tangible remains but also the wide spaces in between. By doing so, what was considered barren becomes visible. For the world of Islam, such a perspective is crucial, given the perceived importance of the desert and of transhumant societies in Islamic history. But it is …
Rural Economy and Tribal Society in Islamic Egypt
The 'Villages of the Fayyum' is a unique and unparalleled thirteenth-century Arabic tax register of the province of the Fayyum in Middle Egypt. Based on this tax-register, this book utilises quantitative research methods and spatial GIS analysis to provide a rich account of the rural economy of the medieval Fayyum, the tribal organization of the village communities, and their rights and duties in relation to the military landholders. It also draw…

Law and Piety in Medieval Islam By Megan H. Reid
In medieval Islamic societies, a true scholar was not judged only by his intellectual knowledge, but also by his scrupulous attention to acts of worship. It meant that men of religion had constantly to perform voluntary acts of prayer and fasting, of sleeplessness and purification. Megan Reid traces in this book the spiralling scale of these voluntary acts of devotion among scholars in Ayyubid and Mamluk Syria and Egypt. Her book shows how these …

Irrigation in the Medieval Islamic Fayyum
Because of the unique set of sources available, the Fayyum in Middle Egypt offers a unique case study of large-scale irrigation from antiquity to the Islamic period. A close reading of a cadastral survey of the province from 641/1243-4 shows that the distinctive aspect of the Islamic period was the local control of water supply and management. Drawing on the engineering experience of the villagers, water allocation and management in the gravity-f…

Marriage, Money and Divorce in Medieval Islamic Society
High rates of divorce, often taken to be a modern and western phenomenon, were also typical of medieval Islamic societies. By pitting these high rates of divorce against the Islamic ideal of marriage,Yossef Rapoport radically challenges usual assumptions about the legal inferiority of Muslim women and their economic dependence on men. He argues that marriages in late medieval Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem had little in common with the patriarchal…

Legal Diversity in the Age of Taqlid
Sultan Baybars' decision to appoint four Chief Qādīs , one from each of the Sunni schools of law, has long been recognized as a turning point in the history of the madhhabs. To date, historians have explained this decision only in political or ideological terms, paying little attention to its implications for the judicial system. Here I argue that the purpose of the new quadruple structure of the judiciary was two-fold: to create a uniform but at…

Matrimonial Gifts In Early Islamic Egypt
The mahr or sadāq is the only marriage gift required under Islamic law. But Islamic law did not necessarily determine actual marriage settlements, even in early Muslim societies. In this essay, I compare the early Islamic legal literature with the pattern of matrimonial gifts recorded in marriage contracts and divorce deeds preserved from early Islamic Egypt. In marriage settlements recorded in the papyri, the groom gave a sadāq that was divided …

Divorce and the elite household in late medieval Cairo
This article examines the rate and causes of divorce among the elite households of late fifteenth-century Cairo. By using a unique contemporary chronicle, it is possible to estimate that a third of all marriages ended in divorce. Wives initiated divorces at least as often as their husbands. They did so by reaching a divorce settlement with their husbands for a financial compensation, or, in the case of desertion, by using the courts to impose a j…
