Beginning Music Teachers’ Self-Reported First-Year Preparation
The purpose of this study was to investigate beginning music teachers’ (BMTs) self-reported preparation for their first year of teaching using more than 20 years of nationally representative data from the U.S. Department of Education. BMTs reported the strongest first-year preparation for teaching their subject matter, teaching to state content standards, and using a variety of instructional methods. BMTs in the sample reported being less prepare…
K–12 Music Educator Job Satisfaction in the United States
The purpose of this study was to better understand the level and predictors of kindergarten through 12th grade (K–12) music educator job satisfaction in the United States. Drawing on data from the National Teacher and Principal Survey of 2015–2016, I identified a nationally representative sample of approximately 1,200 U.S. music teachers, representing a population of ≈127,000. Overall, U.S. music teacher job satisfaction was high, with 84.97% of …
A National Analysis of High School Music Course Grades
The purpose of this study was to describe the grades given to students in U.S. public high school music courses and to examine the relationships between student characteristics, music course grades, and grades in additional subjects. Using descriptive statistics, logistic regression, and latent profile analysis, I analyzed over 5,000 student transcripts from the U.S. Department of Education’s High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 that contained …
The professional values of American undergraduate music majors
The purpose of this survey research was to examine undergraduate music majors’ professional identities and values. Participants ( N = 277) at nine varied postsecondary institutions reported the value they and their peers and professors would place on various musical honors and careers. The instrument was pilot tested and validated through confirmatory factor analysis. The perceived values of participants’ social influences explained 44% of the pa…
A Content Analysis of Assessment Articles in American Music Education Journals, 2000–2020
The purpose of this study was to systematically examine the topics and methods of assessment-related articles published in American music education journals. I reviewed articles from five scholarly journals and five practitioner journals with a journal issue publication date between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2020, to identify peer-reviewed research and interest articles related to student assessment and evaluation. A team of three coders …
Unobserved Potential
This article describes several latent variable approaches that can support rigorous quantitative inquiry in music education. I provide a definition of latent variables, list several advantages associated with their use for the measurement of constructs, and review three types of latent variables featuring utility for music education scholars: factor models, item response models, and latent class (mixture) models. Each type of model is illustrated…
A National Analysis of Music Coursetaking, Social-Emotional Learning, and Academic Achievement Using Propensity Scores
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between curricular high school music participation, academic achievement, and social-emotional learning. The analysis involved a “doubly robust” approach combining propensity score weighting and nested multiple regression using data from the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Results of the study were mixed. Preliminary tests revealed many significant differen…
Music Education Opportunities in Ohio K–12 Public and Charter Schools
The purpose of this study was to examine which Ohio schools offered curricular music courses and the rates at which students participated in those courses. The analysis involved descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, logistic regression, and partially nested multilevel modeling using data from the Ohio Department of Education ( N = 3,222 schools). The investigation revealed that charter schools offered music courses far less often than pub…
Perceiving 'Walk-on-able' Slopes
Prospective control of walking and running requires perceiving sloping surfaces that can and cannot support these activities. Two experiments on slant perception were conducted, motivated by the notion of geographical slant rather than optical slant, and by an affordance based description of surface layout. In Experiment 1, participants standing on a horizontal surface (the ground) adjusted the inclination in the frontal plane of a large wooden p…
