Perinatal HIV exposure and infection and child executive function
In the combined antiretroviral therapy era, limited information exists about cognitive function in children exposed perinatally to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). To address this, we evaluated executive function (EF) among groups with known HIV exposure status during the perinatal period and at ages 6–10 years: children HIV-infected perinatally (CPHIV, n = 99), children born to HIV-infected mothers, but were HIV negative at enrollment (CPHEU,…
Association of adult caregiver depression with developmental disorder likelihood in Ugandan children perinatally exposed and unexposed to HIV
We assessed whether higher caregiver depression is associated with increased likelihood of caregivers rating their children as screening positive for developmental disorders—autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, emotional behavioral disorder, and functional impairment (FI)—among Ugandan children perinatally exposed and unexposed to HIV. Children and their primary caregivers were followed for 12 months. Caregive…
Perinatal HIV exposure and infection and caregiver depressive symptoms
Survival is possible for children perinatally exposed to or infected by HIV in the post-combined antiretroviral therapy era and identifying factors affecting children’s ability to thrive has public health significance. Caregiver mental health is one such factor to consider given its impact on child development, but previous work has not included a full complement of HIV exposure/infection groups within HIV-endemic settings. We compared depressive…
Population-level impact of loss on survivor mortality risk
A respondent with a loss was twice as likely to die when compared similarly aged persons with no loss (OR 2.32; 95 % CI 1.14, 5.30). Loss of either a parent (OR 1.93; 95 % CI 1.01, 4.07), or a child (OR 1.77; 95 % CI 1.08, 2.96) also increased respondent mortality. This elevated risk persists after adjustment for gender and other high-risk health conditions. Any physical activity reduces survivor death rates during this critical period by more th…
