Mental health of internally displaced persons
INTRODUCTION: Although most forcibly displaced individuals remain within their country of origin, internally displaced persons (IDPs) remain under-represented in mental health research. We estimated the prevalence of mental disorders among IDPs and compared prevalence and psychosocial functioning with non-displaced controls. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science for peer-reviewed reports published until 20 June 2025 in any lan…
Longitudinal Associations Between Sources of Uncertainty and Mental Health Amongst Resettled Refugees During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic may have disproportionately affected forcibly displaced people due to parallel uncertainties such as visa insecurity and family separation. This study explicitly examined whether different sources of uncertainty contributed in specific ways to increased psychological symptoms for refugees during the pandemic. A large cohort of 733 refugees and asylum seekers settled in Australia completed a mental health survey in June 2020 …
Profiles of coping resources and their associations with mental health and social functioning among refugees in Indonesia
This study examined the role of coping resources – self-efficacy (problem-focused) and emotion regulation (emotion-focused) – in supporting mental health and social functioning among refugees in a transit setting in Indonesia. Using a latent profile analysis approach with 1,214 participants, three distinct coping profiles were identified: high coping resources, high emotion-focused coping resource, and low coping resources. Results showed that hi…
Does Emotion Regulation Flexibility Work? Investigating the Effectiveness of Regulatory Selection Flexibility in Managing Negative Affect
Regulatory selection flexibility—the ability to flexibly choose emotion regulation strategies that are appropriate to dynamic contextual demands—has been theorized as a critical component of adaptive emotional functioning. Despite this, little research has investigated whether individual differences in regulatory selection flexibility influence real-time emotional experiences. The current study aimed to test the effectiveness of regulatory select…
Moral injury appraisals and complex PTSD in refugees
Findings highlight the role of moral injury appraisals in exacerbating traditional PTSD symptoms, as well as the broader symptoms characteristic of CPTSD. Further, results indicate that specific types of moral injury appraisals (relating to one's own and others' perceived moral transgressions) may lead to differential psychological reactions, raising important implications for clinical practice. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights …
An experimental investigation of spontaneous emotion regulation variability, negative affect, and posttraumatic stress disorder among traumatized refugees
Our findings suggest that a more variable ER approach in response to trauma-salient stressors results in lower distress and is associated with less severe PTSD symptoms. Better understanding the links between patterns of ER strategy use and psychopathology has important implications for the development of effective treatments for refugees. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Perceptions of mental health and perceived barriers to mental health help-seeking amongst refugees
A factor analytic investigation of DSM-5 PTSD symptoms in a culturally diverse sample of refugees resettled in Australia
Our findings offer preliminary support for the applicability of the Anhedonia model to a culturally diverse refugee sample, and contribute to a growing body of studies which indicate that the DSM-5 model may not best represent the symptom structure of PTSD found across non-western conflict-affected populations
