Assessing the impact of a gender-neutral approach to HPV vaccination on vaccination coverage for nine-year-old girls in Cameroon: A retrospective, cross-sectional study
Cameroon introduced the human papilloma virus vaccine (HPVV) into the routine immunization schedule in October 2020. By the end of 2022, coverage remained low. To increase coverage, Cameroon switched to a country-wide, gender-neutral vaccination (GNV) approach in 2023, coupled with a revamped delivery strategy of Community Dialogues (CDs) and Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunization (PIRIs) activities in selected health districts (HDs). W…
Policies and strategies for HPV vaccination schedule completion in immunocompromised girls, including girls living with HIV: Qualitative insights from Eswatini, Malawi, and Uganda
Immunocompromised girls, including girls living with HIV, face significantly increased risk for HPV-linked cervical cancer and require a differentiated human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule. While World Health Organization (WHO) vaccination guidelines exist, recommending immunocompromised individuals receive at least two, if possible three doses of HPV vaccine, little is known about how country health programs implement these recommenda…
Perceptions of a gender-neutral approach to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Cameroon: A qualitative study
Cameroon’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) introduced the HPV vaccine into the routine immunization schedule in Cameroon in October 2020. However, coverage for this vaccine was just 20% by December 2022, prompting the government to adopt and implement a gender-neutral vaccination (GNV) from January 2023. The goal was to increase acceptance, reduce stigma, and improve vaccine coverage. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of key immun…
Re‐theorizing the Sexual Minority Closet: Evidence From Queer South Asian Women
Scholarship generally assumes the closet is a place of safety from the perceived risks associated with coming out. However, this overlooks its function as a source of violence, particularly for those belonging to multiple marginalized communities. Drawing on 40 qualitative interviews with second‐ and 1.5‐generation queer South Asian women (QSAW) in Canada, this article offers a re‐theorization of the closet as a dual site of safety and violence. …
Theorizing a denial reaction to coming out: Revising Goffman's stigma through a sexual identity process model
Erving Goffman's seminal theorization of stigma is at the heart of social scientific conceptualizations of identity management. Using data from qualitative interviews with queer South Asian women in Canada, this article proposes revisions of Goffman's Stigma theory . Intervening his supposition of acceptance and hostility as the two possible reactions to stigma revelation, I establish denial as an additional reaction to identity disclosure. A den…
Brown girls can’t be gay”: Racism experienced by queer South Asian women in the Toronto LGBTQ community
The absence of scholarship on South Asian discrimination in Western queer discourse contributes to a narrative that South Asians are not subjected to racially charged forms of discrimination in the LGBTQ community, which is fundamentally untrue. This article presents narrative-based accounts of nine queer South Asian women in Toronto, Canada, to examine the ways in which they experience racial discrimination in the LGBTQ community, and the impact…
