  • Arousal and valence differentially shape temporal memory for naturalistic events

Open Access•David F Gregory, Ziyuan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Memory•2026

While emotional arousal and negative valence both alter episodic memory, their contributions to different facets of temporal memory remain unclear. Here, we examined two components of temporal memory - relative order and distance estimations - from aversive and neutral movie clips, allowing us to query more naturalistic forms of emotional memory. Overall, relative order was enhanced, and distance estimations were modestly compressed for aversive …

  • Curiosity and the Regulation of Affective Memory

    Open Access•Joy Ham, Vishnu P Murty et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion Review•2025

We propose a cognitive and neurobiological model by which curiosity regulates affective memory, by positively biasing memory encoding through the promotion of emotion regulation. We begin with a brief overview of curiosity's observed emotional effects. Then we introduce three prominent models of affective memory encoding to suggest that the dopaminergic modulation of encoding associated with curiosity may positively bias memory processes. We situ…

  • Linguistic properties of memory expression differentially relate to accuracy, specificity, and perceived veracity

    Open Access•Steven A Martinez, Kate Cliver et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2025

  • Temporal memory for threatening events encoded in a haunted house

    Katelyn G Cliver, David F Gregory et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Despite the salient experience of encoding threatening events, these memories are prone to distortions and often non-veridical from encoding to recall. Further, threat has been shown to preferentially disrupt the binding of event details and enhance goal-relevant information. While extensive work has characterised distinctive features of emotional memory, research has not fully explored the influence threat has on temporal memory, a process putat…

  • Memory for social interactions throughout early childhood

Open Access•Vishnu P Murty, Juan Carlos de Miguel y Canuto et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2020

Previous research shows that forming memories of not only whom we have previously encountered but also the feedback of those encounters supports adaptive behavior. However, there are dynamic changes throughout childhood in declarative memory systems, leaving open the question about the precise timing for the emergence and maturation of memory for social interactions. In this study, we characterized memory for dynamic social interactions during a …
