  • The relationship between subjective vividness and remembered visual characteristics of emotional stimuli across the lifespan

Open Access•Leonard Faul, Maureen Ritchey et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2025

Episodic memories are characterized by the vividness of their recollection. Recent findings show that low-level visual properties can quickly fade from memory and that more vivid memories are associated with less fading. However, further work is needed to clarify this effect over longer delays and how it may shift based on the emotional valence of a stimulus, as well as one's age. Here, participants ( n = 307, aged 19-78, recruited in 2023-2024) …

  • How list composition affects the emotional enhancement of memory in younger and older adults

    Sandry M Garcia, Maureen Ritchey et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 50

Young adults show an immediate emotional enhancement of memory (EEM) when emotional and non-emotional information are presented in mixed lists but not pure lists, but it is unclear whether older adults' memories also benefit from the cognitive factors producing the list-composition effect. The present study examined whether the list-composition effect extended to older adults (55+), testing the following alternatives: (1) younger and older adults…

  • Dissociable effects of conscious emotion regulation strategies on explicit and implicit memory

Daniel G Dillon, Maureen Ritchey et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2007

The authors manipulated emotion regulation strategies at encoding and administered explicit and implicit memory tests. In Experiment 1, participants used reappraisal to enhance and decrease the personal relevance of unpleasant and neutral pictures. In Experiment 2, decrease cues were replaced with suppress cues that directed participants to inhibit emotion-expressive behavior. Across experiments, using reappraisal to enhance the personal relevanc…
