  • Thematic Analysis of Written Exposures in an Integrated Intervention for PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder Following Recent Sexual Assault

Open Access•Tilstra-Ferrell Emily L, Selime R Salim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Sexual Abuse•2026

Sexual assault (SA) is alarmingly prevalent and is associated with increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Exposure-based treatments are a first-line treatment for PTSD and have potential for implementation early after trauma. However, scarce research has been conducted on the application of exposure following recent SA among people with PTSD symptoms and AUD, which is critical to inform the develop…

  • Characterizing Engagement with Web-Based Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Traumatic Stress and Substance Misuse After Interpersonal Violence

    Open Access•Alexandra N Brockdorf, Tilstra-Ferrell Emily L et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a widely used public health approach for delivering early intervention for substance misuse. SBIRT adaptations that incorporate content on interpersonal violence and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms may be warranted, as experiences of interpersonal violence are prevalent and associated with greater substance misuse; however, more research is needed to refine the deli…

  • Latent profiles of social reactions to sexual assault disclosure among bisexual women

Selime R Salim, Benjamin W Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2024

Results suggest women in the profile characterized by highest negative reactions to SA disclosure and highest bisexual minority stress (antibisexual stigma and internalized binegativity) may experience greatest distress postassault. Results highlight the importance for researchers, policymakers, and clinicians to consider and address both SA-related and identity-related stigma among bisexual survivors. • Women's Behavioral Coping Responses During Sexual Assault

    Open Access•Naomi Ennis, Alyssa A Rheingold et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2023•References: 11

We examined the associations between women's behavioral coping responses during sexual assault and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the moderating role of alexithymia in college women ( N = 152). Immobilized responses ( b = 0.52, p b = 0.18, p = .01), and alexithymia ( b = 0.34, p b = 0.39, p = .002), indicating a stronger association for those higher in alexithymia. Immobilized responses are associated with PTSD, particularly f…

  • History of rape moderates the pathways from emotion dysregulation to alcohol and risky sex outcomes among college women

    Open Access•Austin M Hahn, Christine K Hahn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

The current study identified important unique risk and protective pathways that may increase or reduce women's risk for alcohol-related consequences and risky sexual behavior. Importantly, these pathways are comprised of constructs that are malleable and modifiable and can be targeted and changed through intervention. • Usability Testing of a Mobile Health Intervention to Address Acute Care Needs after Sexual Assault

    Open Access•Amanda K Gilmore, Tatiana M Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Sexual assault is associated with a range of poor mental health outcomes. To enhance access to care by this population, technology-based mental health interventions have been implemented in the emergency room; however, more accessible and easily disseminated interventions are needed. The aim of the present study was to test the usability of a mobile health intervention targeting alcohol and drug misuse, suicide prevention, posttraumatic stress sy…

  • Acute Stress Symptoms After Forcible and Substance-Involved Rapes

    Open Access•Anna E Jaffe, Christine K Hahn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 1

In the early aftermath of a sexual assault, survivors often experience symptoms of distress including reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal symptoms. However, less is known about associations between rape characteristics and the nature of early reactions. We designed the current study to examine the unique and combined associations between force and substances during rape on acute stress symptoms. Participants were 56 women (ages 18 to 58) …

  • Predictors of bystander behaviors and sexual assertiveness among college women attending a sexual assault prevention program

    Open Access•Christine K Hahn, Jill Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Identifying predictors of bystander behaviors and sexual assertiveness can help to inform sexual assault prevention programs on college campuses. College sorority members ( N = 141) completed measures of sexual assault history, rape myth acceptance, bystander self‐efficacy, sexual assertiveness, and bystander behaviors before attending The Women's Program, which is a bystander‐based sexual assault prevention program. Regression analyses were cond…
