  • Eliciting social approach-avoidance conflict within a novel experimental paradigm

    Travis C Evans, Mikael Rubin et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2026

Affective facial expressions elicit approach-avoidance motivational responses that shape social behavior. Qualitatively, individuals report frequently experiencing competing motivations to approach and avoid other individuals in social contexts (i.e. social approach-avoidance conflict; AAC). Moreover, theoretical frameworks propose that successful navigation of social AAC plays a critical role in adaptive social behavior. However, despite an exte…

  • The influence of mild traumatic brain injury on attentional Bias

    Open Access•Robert Hickson, Mikael Rubin•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2026

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological condition associated with attentional disruption and emotional vulnerability. Although attentional bias toward emotionally salient stimuli is implicated in depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), its role in individuals with a history of TBI remains poorly understood. This study examined whether TBI moderates the associations between attentional bias and (1) d…

  • PoweR Analysis in Review

    Open Access•Mikael Rubin•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2025

There are many helpful tools that exist for conducting power analyses. However, even the simplest tools require the researcher to make specific decisions about the research design and analytic methodology. This is not always a simple task, especially when the design and/or analysis are more sophisticated (e.g., in the case of longitudinal data with multiple levels). The aims of this paper are to (1) provide an overview of some existing tools in R…

  • Can large language models enhance assessment of Criterion A for PTSD from self-report

Mikael Rubin, Kayleigh N Watters et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2025

Findings suggest that use of LLMs for enhancing Criterion A assessment led to increased information from participants, leading to greater reporting of events meeting Criterion A. However, LLMs did not provide determination of Criterion A on par with clinicians. Findings highlight the need for further assessment of integrating LLMs into online research or treatment. • Low reliability when determining criterion a for posttraumatic stress disorder from self-report descriptions of traumatic events

Mikael Rubin, Anna Alban Foulser et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2023

Findings indicate that relying on self-report from the LEC alone and/or single-rater assessment of open-text trauma descriptions is not recommended for determining whether a traumatic event meets Criterion A. We conclude that it is critical when collecting self-reported PTSD symptoms to provide a clear description of how Criterion A was assessed, initial agreement between raters, and how disagreements were resolved. • The influence of PTSD symptoms on selective visual attention while reading

Mikael Rubin, Nilavra Bhattacharya et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2022

A large body of research has provided evidence that Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms are associated with broad changes in attentional processes which are in turn implicated in core facets of emotion regulation. However, prior research has primarily focused on specific task-based evaluations of attention. In the current study, we evaluated eye movement behaviour among adults that endorsed a traumatic event meeting Criterion A and were…

  • Emotional reactivity to grief-related expressive writing

Mikael Rubin, Baylee Hawkins et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2019•References: 4

The efficacy of expressive writing for bereavement remains unclear, although some evidence suggests that writing about positive memories of one's loved one may be particularly beneficial. The current pilot study compared the effects of a brief positive expressive writing intervention for enhancing positive affect among bereaved adults ( N = 403). Participants were randomly assigned to write about a positive memory of the deceased person or recent…

  • Linguistic characteristics in a non-trauma-related narrative task are associated with PTSD diagnosis and symptom severity

Solange Papini, Santiago Papini et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2014

Linguistic characteristics of trauma narratives have been linked to the development and severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it remains unclear if linguistic markers of PTSD exist beyond the scope of trauma narratives. This study used ambiguous visual prompts to elicit spontaneous narratives from trauma-exposed individuals with (n = 23) and without PTSD (n = 30). Individuals with PTSD used more singular pronouns and death-re…
