Developing a Method of Critical Thematic Analysis for Qualitative Communication Inquiry
This case study elucidates a method of critical thematic analysis that the authors argue is useful as a methodological tool used to code and interpret in-depth, qualitative interview discourses. They extend Owen's (1984) articulation of thematic analysis via recurrence, repetition, and forcefulness by adding a method of closed coding that identifies the prominence of ideologies, power relations, and status-based hierarchies. This method is demons…
Multicultural Neoliberalism and Academic Labor
In light of limited attention to immigrant faculty (aka, international faculty) in the U.S. academy, we analyze interview discourses with 26 female immigrant faculty members from multiple disciplines working across U.S. colleges and universities. Collectively, the women’s voices converge around three primary themes pertaining to neoliberal restructuring of higher education: commodification of education, multicultural neoliberalism, and universal …
Relating across Difference for Social Change
This special issue has its origin in an unexpected conversation. At the reception of the International and Intercultural Communication Division at the 2012 National Communication Association Convention, the co-editors of this issue began discussing their participation and affiliation with a variety of nonprofit organizations (NPOs). As we described our involvements, we noticed a few themes. First, the work and success of the NPOs relied criticall…
Establishing Cross-Cultural Measurement Equivalence of Scales Associated with Face-Negotiation Theory
To extend face-negotiation theory (FNT) to romantic relationship contexts, we examined the patterns of responses to six survey instruments among five countries. We intend this initial paper to serve as a tutorial of testing measurement invariance—specifically by elaborating on: (a) how to establish measurement equivalence and (b) how to test measurement invariance using multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The results highlight the importance…
Measuring Patterns of Self-Disclosure in Intercultural Friendship
This study examined how friendship types, levels of friendship, and cultural backgrounds affected breadth of self-disclosure (BSD). BSD was measured with six self-disclosure topic items—in which higher scores indicated greater willingness to engage in conversations about various topics—from three groups with varying experiences with intercultural friendships. Confirmatory factor analysis was used with Multiple-Indicators, Multiple-Causes models t…
Influences of Culture on Self-Disclosure as Relationally Situated in Intercultural and Interracial Friendships from a Social Penetration Perspective
Intercultural and interracial relationships face barriers, tensions, and challenges that are absent from intracultural and intraracial relationships. These challenges provide the impetus for this study to examine the influences of individualism-collectivism and relational intimacy on topics and dimensions of self-disclosure in intercultural/interracial friendships from a social penetration perspective. A total of 252 participants responded to the…
