  • Development strategies for middle‐income countries in a digital world—Insights from modern trade economics

    Open Access•Jörg Mayer•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

The digitalisation of economic activities, combined with a secular slowdown in the growth of global output and trade, reduces the potential of traditional export‐oriented manufacturing as a development strategy. This paper takes a trade economics perspective to outline a possible response to the changed nature of industrialisation. The outlined response currently applies mainly to middle‐income countries but deserves attention also in longer‐term…

  • The Growing Financialisation of Commodity Markets

Jörg Mayer•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2012

Commodities are key for developing countries' economic integration. This article distinguishes two types of financial investors in commodities and emphasises differences in position taking motivation and price impacts. Index trader positions are positively correlated with roll returns, while money managers emphasise spot returns. During 2006–2009, index trader positions had a price impact for some agricultural commodities, as well as oil. During …

  • Tripling Africa's Primary Exports

Jörg Mayer, Pilar Fajarnes•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2008

Income growth in Africa that is high enough to achieve the internationally agreed development goals implies a rise in the region's per capita income by the early 2020s to about Latin America's current level. The paper shows that such income growth would be associated roughly with a nine-fold increase in Africa's manufactured exports, but also with a tripling of its primary exports, which in absolute terms would account for two-thirds of the incre…

  • Selective phonological impairment

    Open Access•Grzegorz Dogil, Jörg Mayer•ARTICLE•Phonology•1998

The present study proposes a new interpretation of the underlying distortion in APRAXIA OF SPEECH . Apraxia of speech, in its pure form, is the only neurolinguistic syndrome for which it can be argued that phonological structure is selectively distorted. Apraxia of speech is a nosological entity in its own right which co-occurs with aphasia only occasionally. This...conviction rests on detailed descriptions of patients who have a severe and lasti…

  • Learning sequences and structural diversification in developing countries

Jörg Mayer•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1996

The article explains structural diversification through the interrelationship between learning by doing and the introduction of new technology. Structural diversification is constrained when learning‐by‐doing benefits do not spill over across national borders and when the fixed‐cost expenditure associated with the introduction of new technology is high. Structural diversification is seen as being the result of dynamic learning sequences where int…
