  • The geography of artificial intelligence in European regions

    Open Access•Bernardo S Buarque, Pablo Casas et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2026

This paper maps the geography of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, exposure and use across European Union (EU) NUTS-2 regions using six complementary indicators. Findings reveal a spatial paradox: while AI exposure and worker-level use are relatively widespread, innovation and firm-level adoption remain concentrated in high gross domestic product (GDP), human capital-intensive hubs. A persistent implementation gap separates structural expo…

Along these lines, we introduce an agent-based model to reconstruct historical communication using letters. We use this model to simulate the letter-sending process and its subsequen…

  • OK Computer

    Open Access•Bernardo S Buarque, Ronald B Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This article investigates the creation and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) patents in Europe. We create a panel of AI patents over time, mapping them into regions at the NUTS2 level. We then proceed by examining how AI is integrated into the knowledge space of each region. In particular, we find that those regions where AI is most embedded into the innovation landscape are also those where the number of AI patents is largest. This sug…
