Alexander’s Last Carouse
The drinking party at Medius’ in Babylon on 31 May 323 b.c ., marking the onset of Alexander’s terminal illness, is explored from contemporary and later texts. Close reading of fragments by Nicobule and Aristobulus, set beside the reticence of the court daybooks (Ephemerides) and the studied vagueness of secondary sources, clarifies in detail the sequence of events. Justin, Plutarch and the author of the Liber de morte Alexandri cast light on the…

This article will not try to describe the whole Wikimedia galaxy. It will stick to Wikipedia in English, and that's ambitious enough. The English-language Wikipedia, by far the biggest of them, now (28th November 2006) contains 1,506,659 articles. The German Wikipedia reached 500,000 articles on 23rd November (note in passing: the English Wikipedia has added that many articles to its total in just six months), while the French Wikipedia reached t…

The vineyards of Laconia

The Iliad , the Odyssey and their audiences
It has been easy to take the apparently detached viewpoint of the two early Greek epics as actually objective, a window on a ‘Heroic Age’, on a ‘Homeric society’ and its values. We used to ask whether ‘Homeric society’ belongs to the poets' own time or to some earlier one. We still ask how to characterize and explain the ways in which the ‘Homeric world’ differs from any world that we can accept as having existed: we answer with phrases such as ‘…
The Curriculum Vitae of Duris of Samos
Duris of Samos is significant enough, among lost Hellenistic historians, for a paragraph or two to be devoted to him in most works on the history or literature of the period. For the last two centuries such paragraphs have been saying among other things that Duris went to Athens and studied under Theophrastus. But Athenaeus 128a, the source cited for this statement, does not support it unless a doubtful conjecture is admitted to the text
The Wedding Feast of Caranus the Macedonian by Hippolochus
Andrew Dalby, who furnished a new translation of The Banquet by Philoxenus in PPC 26, here performs the same service for another important text. Like the piece by Philoxenus, that by Hippolochus survives only in the pages of The Deipnosophists by Athenaeus. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, it seems to be the earliest surviving text which is devoted exclusively to the description of a banquet; and it has many other features of interest. This is …
