  • Femme interiorities: A provocation

    Open Access•Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2026

Femme interiorities is a series of provocations and essays – methodological, creative, and theoretical – devoted to thinking about femininity and its multiple interior forms, iterations, and archives. How do we tell the story of femininities, take it back, tell it anew, from feminist, queer, raced, diasporic, decolonial modes of being? Femme, as we define it, assembles and fissures an irreverent and fugitive femininity, and in so doing, gestures …

  • Melancholia and other negativities

    Open Access•Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2025•References: 3

At the heart of this article is the question: what might it mean for us to become literate in our mothers' melancholia? Drawing on the ambivalence of two domestic scenes-its melancholia, its unbearability, its haptic residue-this article accesses a brown feminine and feminist lieux de memoir (place of memory). I argue that for brown immigrant daughters, feminism is inherited, not as rebukes, admonitions, endorsements, condemnations, but by enteri…

  • Reproductive Justice, Bodily Autonomy, and State Violence

    Open Access•Elizabeth Beck, Kristie L Seelman et al.•ARTICLE•Affilia•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Media stories have highlighted some devastating consequences of attacks on bodily autonomy (i.e., the fundamental right to make decisions about one's own body without constraints or violence), such as the surging maternal mortality rates among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), a 10-year-old rape victim’s travel out of state for an abortion, families’ exodus from Texas to avoid child maltreatment charges in response to their children’s gend…

  • Ethical Whiteness and the Death Drive

    Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Camera Obscura Feminism Culture…•2020

This article looks at two controversial war films—Eye in the Sky (dir. Gavin Hood, UK/South Africa, 2015) and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (dir. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, US, 2016)—both of which feature white female protagonists as conflicted but central participants in the racialized domains of war and political machinations. While one film takes on a serious ethical polemic (the innocent lives of civilians caught in the visual crosshairs of drone …

  • Making Way for Ghosts and Mothers

    Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Meridians•2019•References: 4

This essay takes on ghosts as an explicit analytic lever to examine the storied archive of one racial and racialized mother. It defines ghosts as conglomerating and attached energies whose nodes of human connection rely on the lived experience of violence, violation, and volatility. Through three narrated encounters, the essay uses social and affective memory and autoethnographic matter as food for critical thought, building on philosophy, postco…

  • Outing the Pakistani queer: Pride, paranoia and politics in US visual culture

    Open Access•Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2017

This article draws on the 26 June 2011 US embassy-sponsored Gay Pride parade in Islamabad, Pakistan alongside popular US visual cultural moments (2008–2012). I use visual culture to reread US intrigue in Pakistani queer subjects through specific images of terrorist/feminized masculinities – images that elucidate the conspicuous shifts in the technologies of power and sexuality in the context of contemporary Pakistani LGBT visibility. I move throu…

  • Undoing Islamophobia: Awareness of Orientalism in Social Work

Elizabeth Beck, Moon Charania et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Progressive Human…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Islamophobia describes the racism, exploitation, and violence experienced by Arabs, individuals of Arab descent, and Muslims. Although social workers are meant to challenge social injustice, social work codes of ethics and the literature are without guidance for unlearning Islamophobia. Arguing that one’s ability to interrupt Islamophobia is strengthened by an understanding of the historical record and theoretical tenets of Orientalism, we offer …

  • Bifurcation: Personal Identity and Larger Feminisms

    Moon Charania•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Women s Studies•2000

As [Mohanty] points out the image of the average third world woman stands in opposition to the implicit self representation of most `Western women as educated modern as having control over their bodies and sexuality.” This distinction between some western womens representation of women and their self-presentation problematizes the growing connection between these two groups. Unfortunately by reproducing such generalizations about world women West…
